Lang 28 - more information

I am late to the original post, but hope you find this information helpful. I bought the Lang 28 that is carried in the link to the Hull Truth website. The previous owners we purchased it from were incredibly friendly and helpful with the transfer and education of the operation of the boat. They owned (andl loved) Lady Louise for many years and decided to move up to a larger trawler. The boat was very well maintained over the years with a complete refit in 2006. I bought the boat when I retired and my wife and I have enjoyed every minute that we spend on her. The refit replaced the old engine with an 8.1 Crusader engine that runs flawlessly. Although the boat is capable of higher speeds, I like to cruise at around 10 knots or under. This is my first big boat, so I had to get use to the single screw steering, but I have long ago adapted and feel like I can operate the boat blindfoled. The boat is incredibly seaworthy, as my wife and I found out when we got caught out on Nantucket Sound when a squall blew through. We were kicked around a bit and it was pretty scary, but there is no doubt that this boat will get you back to port safely even under the worst conditions. Not sure how many more years I will be able to keep the boat given my age, but will definitely enjoy every moment spent on the boat. I do have some of the original brochures and would be willing to copy and mail out at no cost if anyone is seriously interested. To all current and future Lang owners -- enjoy an incredible boat!

Hi Langster, welcome aboard and welcome to the very closed word of lang boat owner!

From what Ted told me they designed them together to make something they were both happy with

Hey Johnny, I am just waiting for this damned snow to melt so I can work or her. I have hundreds of things I want to do before end of May for our next cruise. Timeline will be tight but I will see what I can do.
Sorry to hear that you won't be able to enjoy yours this season, but next season will have an even greater taste :)

Take care.

Selling My Lang 28

It is a sad day -- time to sell my Lang 28, age has finally caught up with me. My Lang 28 is in very good condition with excellent mechanics. There was a complete refit in 2006 that included an entirely new motor replacement with an 8.1 Crusader motor, totally new wiring and steering and many other upgrades that exceeded $30,000 in total. The motor has just over 600 hours and has been yard maintained. There is a West Marine RIB that comes with the boat that can be attached to St. Croix dinghy davits from the rear of the boat. The boat is under wraps now in the boatyard. It does have an access door to the inside, but viewing would need to be before the winter season sets in. I will be un-wrapping the boat in the early spring for those who may have an interest in looking. I will be asking somewhere between $11,000 and $12,000. If you have any interest in my Lang 28, please drop me a note. Thanks. Langster.

As for being a Bolger design, the bow sections of the boat pic in the OP certainly have a couple of things in common with the lines of my prior 28' Shearwater Yawl, a Bolger design produced by Edey & Duff, While the hollow may not impact behavior on plane all that much (other than slicing through waves very nicely) you will find her behavior at displacement speed quite comfortable.

I met Ted in 1982 when I was looking to have a small longline boat for Sword/Tuna/Tilefish in the canyon off of the NJ coast. At the time, Ted had a shop in the sleepy little town of Chrisfield, MD. Being new to the area, I asked a gas station attendant if he knew where the TL boat factory was, and he told me NO, but if I followed him on his moped, he would bring me to Ted Lang's home. Having driven 6 hour to get there, I decided to take a shot. Pulling up to an old historic waterfront home, which I later was told was lived in by the original governor of MD, I was asked to come inside for a chat with a very "interesting" man. After discussing my needs, Ted asked if I was interested to see if I was interested in viewing his latest government project...This is where the Twilight Zone Music started playing.

Ted brought me to another room where on an old dining room table sat two black boxes that resembled the old fashioned arch topped mailboxes. As he lifted the covers, he told me that this was top secret, and that I should never tell anyone what I was about to see and hear. He then told me about the Navy's plan to have Boats carrying intercontinental missiles roaming the seas, ready to launch an attack at the President's command. He also said that the molds were already built, disassembled, and buried at an undesignated location ! Needless to say, I was gabberflasted...
After a bit more conversation, I bid farewell to my new friend for the 6 hour ride back home, all the way thinking about what had just been laid before me. Was Ted a KOOK, or an unconventional genius ?
Returning home, and after considerable analysis, I decided to have my boat built by Jack Henriques, of Henriques Boatworks here in NJ...
I understand that Ted has passed away in 2019, so I guess it was ok to tell my story about my meeting wit Ted Lang, the Unconventional Genius !

Here's mine

It was a '73. 225 HP Chrysler. My parents bought it, then I bought it from them later in life. I did all I could to keep it. That boat was our life. I was raised around that boat. Unfortunately my mom and dad eventually passed, and now I have my dads silverton. It was tough taking care of this and that so the Lang went to the scrap yard. Motor went underwater on me.

The boat resided in Maryland near Annapolis in the early 70's for a while then near Fort McHenry area on various creeks. This boat was a rockfish magnet. I can't count how many fish we caught with it.
It weathered every storm on the CHesapeake Bay and it was just a badd-azz boat.

It was called the Sun Chaser.
