NW Alabama to Houston, Tx.

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

Tony, say hi to Steve and Ronney in Houma for me. If you want a great, reasonably priced breakfast, go to the hospital cafeteria (2 minute walk there....10 minutes to get back).

Wifey B: Hospital cafeteria? :nonono::nonono::nonono: That's just too freaky for me. I don't like to eat at gas stations either.

Well, I had better not mention that you have to walk past the morgue to get to the cafeteria then. (and no, the proximity of the morgue is not a reflection on the quality of the food!)

Will say hi to Ronnie and Steve for you.
We have eaten there before. It's hard to explain to anyone that has not been been to coastal La. that hospital food can actually taste good. We also plan on going back to Bilello's Cafe. Great food there.

I'll let you know when we get to Lake Arthur. There is a really nice little hidden RV park about 45 mins to an hour (I think) north of the ICW. It has a small dock and sells Gasoline. Not sure about Diesel Fuel. Anyway, we stayed at their dock once before. It's called Myers Landing.

I believe our next stop after Lake Arthur will be Lake Charles and then Port Arthur, TX. Hopefully we can get together at either Port Arthur or Lake Chas.

We're delayed a bit, so we'll be here until March 15 at least.

From my experience and others also, there is a very good likelyhood that you wont be able to head north out of Mobile Bay until late May or early June. The frequent late spring rains bring flooding and lots and lots of logs coming down the Mobile River.

We made it to Houma, La. in 2 days like we hoped for. We got here the day before yesterday and met Ronnie (Kart Racer) for the first time. Really great guy. He offered rides anything else we needed. Yesterday morning started out with a stop to a bakery where he had surprised my wife with a King Cake which is a big deal down here during Mardi Gras season and some fancy French pastry. He took us to West Marine to get a windlass part. Pulling up anchor and rode by hand is not only not fun, it's messy.
Anyway, at West Marine, we met up with Steve Willett. Another great member here. We met Steve here in Houma 3 years ago, on our way to inland waterways. Ronnie bought us all lunch and then we went to find a mechanic to check out my tranny. False alarm, my ignorance of machinery led me to believe I had a problem, when in fact, I did not. Even at that, I was relieved when the bill was only $186. Steve had brought us (Helen, actually) a sack of his backyard oranges. Long story, but these are Steve's magic healing oranges. Anyway, it was a great get together and hopefully I will get to see them again today.

Tony
Long run from Houma to Port Authur-Not to many safe spots to anchor along the ICW west of Morgan City. If you need a place to stay on the way, I have a camp with dock at Cypremort Point you can use. Just give me a few hours heads up and I can meet you there-celll 337-280-3086

Tony, if you take Doug up on his offer, let me know and I will meet you there (if that's OK Doug). Make sure he brings his brother-in-law to cook. He is pretty dang good.

Thanks, I might just take u up on that.
Again, the greatest people hang around TrawlerForum

Your always looking for a meal:)That would be great to have you and Michelle of course.

Meal? Did someone say 'meal'?

Doug, I was looking at my charts and Cypremort Point would be a great place to be. Sure beats my next choice- Bayou Petite Anse.

My wife just cant get over how nice everyone in Louisiana really is. This last leg of our trip between Long Beach, Ms. and through La. has been great so far.
It will also be nice to finally meet B and Michelle. We cris-crossed paths a few times but never actually met.

Looking forward to meeting you Sunday afternoon. My cell is 281 then 687 then 9525. My e-mail addy is SailorTonyB at msn.com

Would it be easier for you to give me directions by phone or e-mail?
Thanks again, Tony B

I'd strongly advise against putting your phone number and email on a public forum. You might want to have a mod remove it. Easy for spammers to pick up.

After leaving Morgan City/Berwick area in La., we continued to head westward. Hell of a strong wind hit us on the ICW. We had 2 foot seas, white caps and foam streaks in the ICW in areas barely 300' wide. I estimated the winds to be around 25MPH from the west and dead on our nose. It blew lots of water out of the ICW and the gulf. The tows pushing barges were understandably hogging the center of the already narrrow channels. The water that normally went up to the trees and marsh was now mudflats. Anyway, we ran hard aground and after 15 - 30 mins, we were able to get up and going again.
We decided to take DDalme (Doug) up on his offer to spend the night or however long we wanted to on his dock at his camp in Cypremort Point, La. We hit a lot of much lower than normal water along the way. We made it to Cypremort Point and there was Doug, smiling and waving. Incidentally, we had never met Doug before or were we ever able to spell Cypremort Point. Anyway, the admiral threw Doug the mid-ship and bow lines. As he was tying up, I tried to swing my stern to the dock so he could tie that also. The stern was swung out at a steep angle and now firmly sitting on bottom. So here we are showing my rear end to all passer-bys.
Fortunately, we were easily able to step off the bow and onto Doug's dock. We introduced ourselves and hit it off right away. We went inside his house and he made coffee and presented the admiral a King Cake. It's a Mardi Gras tradition. We all had coffee and King Cake. Doug was somewhat surprised at how low the water had gotten.
We spent the night and wanted to stay longer but at the same time we were both anxious to get back to Texas while the unusually good weather is still holding up.
Doug is a great guy and this forum has brought us together as well as others on here to meet face to face. Thanks again Doug.

Doug was such a wonderful host, we now have him listed as a 5 Star Stop-over on Active Captain.

Since we left DDalme (Doug), we have been to Myers Landing in Lake Arthur, La. and now comfortably tucked in the L'Bourge Casino dock in Lake Charles, La. After tying up, we had a great buffet dinner there this evening. The buffet is the only way I can consistently beat any casino.
Sometime in the next few days, we are hoping to connect with Dimer (Blue) and his admiral, Michelle.

Gotta love this forum for bringing people together both on this website and also face to face for those of us more fortunate.

:thumb: This time of year the oranges were most likely Satsumas. Good stuff.
Wish I could have been there to meet you also. I am sort of stuck in the NE for weather waiting to bring Evangeline home to Lafayette.

You could have turned right in ICY and slowly come up the Vermilion if you have less than 20 feet over waterline and a 60 inch or less draft. They don't operate the bridges anymore.

Good luck with bringing Evangeline home to Lafayette. We just deal with things as they come. 'Situations' are all part of boating. Where in NE are you?

Katracer, he is currently docked at the Sabine Port Authority marina. Not sure if he has internet there.

Hi Ronnie (Kart racer).
We stayed at Lake Charles' L'Auberge casino dock an extra day due to weather. We left there yesterday morning and got to Sabine Pass, Texas late yesterday afternoon. When we arrived, Dimer was already at the dock and helped us tie up. After a short while he whisked me off to house party/get-together that some of his friends have on a regular basis. had a great time. A woman at the party asked how I met Dimer, and with my usual off-beat humor, I replied " I met him on the internet........ on a dating site', at that point she almost choked on her boudan.
Helen stayed behind to catch up on some rest.
Today we are going to catch up some more on our rest. Then, we will be waiting on weather for the last 2 travel days back to Kemah, Tx.
Meeting you guys on here has been great. Hopefully, I might get to see dimer and Michelle again before we leave.
We are looking forward to and plan to attend Steve Wilett's spring get-together and see all of you again.

Tony
So you finally met "BLUE" in the flesh-What a trip. Hope the rest of the trip goes well. Spring get together at Steve's?? What's that about??

Yeah Steve...whats that about???

Steve said after Mardi Gras and he will let all know once details are made.

Hey Doug

Blue is a trip all right. We spent some time together today, the 4 of us. Blue took us shopping to Walmart and we all had lunch at some kinda of RoadHouse, might have been Texas.
Oh BTW, last night we found the Power Cord Adapters. I took the whole boat apart looking for them a few days ago and to no avail. Last night, Helen went into her laundry bag where she keeps all her detergents, dryer sheets, etc. and there they were both of them. Just nestled away so peacefully. LOL
Anyway, looking forward to seeing you again.

That's right! for several years now, (couldn't do it last year though) we have had a "boaters lunch" at a camp just off Hwy90 & La311 near Houma. It is landlocked so we can't get there in boats but easy by car. We have lunch, bring charts, computers with pictures, and talk of boat trips and boats. Marsha and I will supply pulled pork sandwiches and salad, some folks will bring dessert and snacks. It is all very informal and BYOL. Arrive 10-11 am stay till???
Other than after Mardi Gras I don't have a date set yet, probably, Saturday 11th or 18th of March. I will fix a date soon, I'll post more information on the Cruising and Events - Gulf Coast section of this forum. Questions or comments you can contact me stwillettataoldotcom
