Some of you may know I'm in the process of purchasing a 89 GB 42 with twin 3208TA CATS.

What type of transmissions did they use on these engines and is this type(s) prone to breaking?

The transmission manufacturer, series, and ratio are often on the sales listing. Hard to comment on the transmission without knowing that information.

The surveyor may have included that info in the report.
 
The Twin disc MG 507 was common with CAT in those days, but if you really want an accurate answer, you need to read the data plate on the gear.. Or usually, some real good pics of the gear showing all of it will allow me to ID it..
