Rocker starting switch

I have 2005 MS Rumrunner 34, twin Yanmars. The starting rocker switch doesn't always work, it takes several try's to get it started. I want to replace but not sure what I need or who might have it. When ever in doubt always ask the pool of knowledge.

It might be the switch or it might not. Raise the helm station and look underneath that switch. Jumper the switch a couple of times with a short piece of wire. If that solves the problem then I think that switch is a Carling Contura model.

But if the problem doesnt go away with jumpering, then it may be a bad connection or a bad solenoid. Clean and tighten all connections at the switch and down to the solenoid. Also check the ground.

If that doesnt work, then run a temporary 14 gauge wire from the heavy starting lug and touch it to the pos terminal of the solenoid. If that works then check the connections as described above again.

If it doesnt work then it is probably a bad solenoid.

One thing I am not sure is maybe there is an intermediate solenoid between the switch and the heavy starting solenoid. Many engines have them. So check both as described above.

You will usually find a manufacturer's name (or symbol) and a model number printed on the side of the switch. You may have to remove it to see this.


Test it as described above and if you determine that the switch is defective, use the information on the switch to find a replacement.


You say you have two engines so I assume there are two starting switches. Just swap them and see if the problem swaps with the switch or if you have a problem with the same engine. If the problem goes with the switch, you have your answer. If not, it's something other than the switch.

Yea... just touch the switch posts together and see if it happens. If it does, maybe check the stud bolts on starter and see if they are tight. Then pull the starter, your brushes or solenoid might be toast.
