Changing the oil filter on my starboard engine (CAT 3116 TA) is a PITA. I need to lie on top of the engine and reach down the outboard side in order to remove and replace the oil filter. I might be able to crawl between the engine and the hull but I would likely have to remain there until someone arrived to pull me out by the ankles.

I know there must be a remote kit which would allow me to move the offending appendage to the inboard side. I can't find one online or on the CAT website. Any ideas?

Thanks

Try " Jegs Auto Parts " I ordered mine from thier online catalog. You will need the center bose thread size and the diameter of the gasket seating surface. The kit I ordered came with the engine adapter plate, hoses and the filter plate. Best thing I ever did, I increased the filter size and made it vertical so you can pre- fill it. My TMD31A Volvo had the filter horizontal on the engine, it was impossible to change without spilling oil.

Cat made those engines with the filter both on inboard side of engines. So unless v-drive, stbd would be on the same side as governor and opposite side as turbo. Port would be on turbo side. I will say there is kind of a mess of plumbing for the stbd, so buying from Cat might be expensive.

But as others have posted, you could probably buy a filter adapter, a filter head and two hydraulic hoses and do the same thing.

Perhaps I'm not understanding. The port engine has filter and turbo on the inboard side. The starboard engine is the identical setup so the filter and turbo are on the outboard side.

Cat does supply that engine with the oil filter on the opposite side from the turbo. But boatbuilder had to order it that way, sometimes they don't.

Come to think of it, I can't remember which side is "natural" for that engine. But they certainly could have the filter on either side.

Then GB must have ordered them this way or they ran out of the "opposites" and used what they had on hand.

I have seen boats where the engines were installed such that ALL the filters were on outboard side. Someone there had some 'splainin' to do..

BigCat, I would be curious to know if it's not too much trouble.

I started my repower w a remote to get the filter in a convenient location but mostly to get a screw up filter that wouldn't dump oil in the bilge at oil filter changing time. Had troubles w leaks over the years so receintly I removed the remote and just use the horizontal OEM filter setup.
So if you go remote hope you don't have leaks.
