Gentlemen

I have a 34 Mainship trawler

3 days ago, I experienced a burning rubber smell coming from the port stern.

I shut the port motor off and went home on my starboard motor.

The cleaning diver said the cutless bearing on the standoff for the port shaft looked OK.

I ran the port motor for about an hour in neutral and there was no burning smell, I put it in gear and within a minute the smell came back.

Any Idea what it could be.

Shaft log? Exhaust hose? Wire insulation?

thanks

No smell inside the bilge/ engine compartment. All wires OK

What's a shaft Log?

Do you have rubber exhaust hose? You may be missing some raw water pump impeller vanes or have a partial blockage. There may be enough water flow for the engine at idle, but the increased fuel burn when the engine is in gear may be raising the exhaust temperature to wear the hose is getting cooked.

If the exhaust sounded louder than the other side than your raw water flow is reduced and the exhaust hose burned.
