Always a problem to control tools, especially free hand. Nothing much beats practice. Nothing beats an edge guide where possible. High RPM is always a plus; why do they make Dremels with low speeds? I run mine at 'scream', with carbide burrs and cutters. At high speeds, Dremels, grinders, cutoff wheels, routers and such, nibble only a little with each pass at the work and with less tendency to grab.

Cleaning out cracks in gelcoat to prepare for repair makes me wonder why the cracks? Failing gelcoat is one thing, like where it's too thick. Some failure in the laminate below is quite another. Flexure? Impact damage? Bolts and fittings too tight? Some of these will simply cause the repair to fail and should be fixed first.
