I got tired of roasting in the sun sitting in my fancy hot tub ?, so I hillbilly engineered this sun shade from one of those yard triangle sail shade things. Kind of a temporary deal right now-- seeing if I like it. ImageUploadedByTrawler Forum1433372911.822248.jpg

I'm sure it will blow down after the first puff of wind, but it's throwing off some shade for my beer drinking time right now!

I'm hoping the wrinkles will disappear after a few days...

Finally got that mast I've been wanting. Little short tho-- story of my life...

And I see it's a little off kilter now that I posted this pic. Will have to adjust that, mañana.

Nice canopy, 'Dude! It seems to fit well there. Is that the one from Costco? I was thinking of a couple of those for my backyard. I bet those wrinkles are gone after one or two sunny days.

If we're talking cobbled-together sun shades (to borrow a term from a recent thread!), I need to contribute my latest version. It's a slight variation of my redneck canvas from last summer.

Here it is fully extended forward to the aft pilothouse wall.

The view from inside while it's positioned for half coverage and ladder access.

I added the corner lines to safeguard against a strong wind bending the temporary poles.

I found that with the cover retracted halfway, there is little wind pressure on it when underway. I still install the corner lines just in case, but it rides very well...much better that when it's fully extended. I presume it's because of the station wagon effect on my boat. With the top open along the aft edge, there's an exit for that air rushing in to fill the low pressure area aft of the house while underway.

Gotta love that extra shade in the warm summer months!

Both are great additions, and look very nice. Shades really extend the comfortable use of outdoor space.:thumb::thumb:(one thumb for each)

:thumb: I like the design. Besides keeping the tub/beer cool, below decks also benefits. Shade is good!

I'm light skinned and don't do well in the sun....and we live in a desert. When I bought our boat I had to have a cockpit sunshade put on. They did a nice job and here's what we ended up with. It's only braced with two poles down below, one on either side of the transom door, and two poles from above, one from each side of the arch. It's made of Stamoid material and after five years of use it shows no wear at all.

Nice shades! Mine is a little odd looking, but so is the boat, so it kind of fits.

Sitting under the moon shade tonight listening to manatee surface for air. This is cool.

Dang FlyWright. love that open look from the salon to the aft deck. Quite inviting. while not actually invited.
Got two of the Costco sails. use them just like the cardude. No hot tub though.
Shoot it is only Wednesday. looking forward to the lake and a small wooden boat show Sat.

Whad up wid yall ? We on the boat tonight . Got to go to work tomorrow but
it's easier leaving from the boat than the house . Steak and California wine for dinner .

Looks great, Marty!

I bet it can get scary on that bow, huh?

I guess I should include my Breeze Booster in the discussion. It's the scoop over the hatch. This little gem pushes lots more air through the cabins for minimal bucks. IIRC, it was $70-80.

Our aft deck isnice and large , so the sun shade is a 10x10 back yard folding item, with steel frame and legs

About $60 at box stores .

Sure the thing will rust , eventually, but for $60 with 5 years of service , so what?

For folks with out the space , the local RV shop will have aluminum stock that will hold a bolt rope , so you can slide the awning in place , far stronger than snaps.

Living in Florida, I approve this post.

Nice job to all, shade is king at all costs.

Cardude that looks nice . With that forward cockpit area you could do something like this Biloxi Lugger and call it an Island Lugger .:D Check out the porch swing .

Some canvas additions really detract from the beauty of the boat. I think this is one of those!

But the porch swing is cool! ?

Holy smokes! Now that's some serious shade!

Well I don't tan I burn, and we live in south Florida on a mooring and only use the A/C at night to sleep. The shade keeps the boat the same temp as outside even during the sunniest part of the day, which in the Keys during the summer is usually in the low to mid 90s. To hot for northen folk but once you have been here awhile it's fine. My wife now wears a jacket when it gets down to the mid 70s.

So no Mosquitos/no seeums on the mooring ball? The no seeums run me inside at sundown here at the slip.

We were very plesantly surprised by the general lack of mosquitos and no seeums in Boot Key. We stayed at a marina up in Tavernier for about 9 months and at times they were unbearable. We have been in Boot Key for about 21 months now save trips to Key West and Key Largo and rarely are bothered by them. I have heard people anchored over next to the mangroves complain about them though.

I just noticed you are it Texas. They have noseeums in Texas?? I thought everything was BIG in Texas.

Maybe better when see the whole boat .

I think that "FA TEE K" has or was for sale for a while. Nice boat but I agree the sun shade fwd detracts. It was overpriced by a lot IMHO.

Good live aboard in protected waterways. If I recall, it had a nice interior setup.

Here's a link to the Costco shade I mentioned in an earlier post. It's a 13 ft triangle and costs $29 with Costco membership.

Cardude gave me a good idea to deal with my sun problem..
If you need something smaller or Custom made, these guys are the bomb. This is 7' x 9' x9'

Custom Shade Sails - Custom and Pre Made Sun Shade Sails

Just got mine done, cut to fit the CD and the space I had to work with. I mostly needed a sunshade over the front wingows and hatch. The boat could get like a terrarium inside when the front canvas wasn't in place. The shade allows for more light without the Cave like feeling when the canvas is on, and filters out the UV nicely. Visibility to drive from the lower station too!

That custom unit is better than what I rigged up. Mine is too short.

That looks really good!
