Hi!

My wife and I are considering purchasing a 1987 CHB Ponderosa 40 Sundeck with twin 225hp FWC Ford Lehman Diesels about 1900 hours. We intend to use the boat in the Puget Sound and points up north, possibly as far as Ketchikan. Do any of you veterans know this vessel, its engines, and sea kindliness. We would also be quite interested in what could be expected as an approximate fuel burn, (we realize there are a lot of variables). Any and all help will be greatly appreciated as we venture forth.

Welcome aboard Steve and Nancy!
My wife and I have a Present 42 Sundeck (Chung Hwa yard) and clearly they are the same hull and very similar in layout. I am a huge fan of a sundeck design. Lots of "areas" for entertaining, or just to put some space between you and the SO. We have twin 135 Lehmans (no turbo). We seem to use about 4.5 gallons an hour, at hull speed. These boats will never plane- even with the bigger HP.
The only negatives are all the steps to transverse, ant a lot of "sail area/ windage". Good luck.

Forklift:

Thank you very much for the quick reply we are most grateful. Could you advise what the hull speed, which I assume you are referring to speed over ground (SOG) of your vessel is.

Nancy and I are not new to coastal cruising in fact I hold a captains license. However, we are quite green to the CHB world. We have numerous questions relating to these vessels, (engines/transmissions, known problem areas, sea kindliness and the list goes on). We are eager to learn thus garnering the knowledge and experience of those who "have been there-done that".

Forklift: If you'd be incline and so as not to inundate the forum, may we have permission to "private message" you? Steve and Nancy
