Ventilation under your mattress

I am wondering what others have under your mattress on board for ventilation to prevent moisture accumulation. I've seen some wooden slats, plastic like fabric in rolls and would like to hear and see what others are using. We are getting new v-berth cushions made and want to address the ventilation issue at the same tme to avoid mildew up here in the PNW.

Our bed is over the aft water tanks, so without attention, things could get damp. I put a slab of 2" blue styrofoam down on top of the tanks years ago and have never looked back. The mattress is totally dry and we also get less noise from the tanks when they are getting low.

We have mattresses made by Boat Beds. They have some kind of plasticy (or at least non-mattressy) bottom. We have nothing else under them.

Keith, we use a roll fabric that lines the area where the mattress lies. it's a support material that creates an air pocket below the mattress. I can get you the specs (they're at the office).

We use Hypervent. A woven plastic fiber. Great stuff, we got ours from Fisheries Supply. Comes on a big roll, you cut off what you want (in the store, don't know how it works mail order).

I've used industrial pre-filter filter media. The polyester stuff, not the fiberglass. Cheap. Looks very similar to the hypervent stuff without the backing

Another vote for hypervent. We've used it on several boats, and it works very well. Just cut to fit.

Great! We were at Fisheries yesterday and almost bought some hypervent. Next week I will go there before we head up to Anacortes and buy some.

We took off the doors as they restricted access to the area under the bed where our doze. of pair of shoes are as the quilt hangs down. My wifes doctor recommend the head of the bed be elevated 4 to 6 inch to help her breathing so there is a gap around the bed. So moisture can not get trapped.

The surface under our matresses is made of mahogany planks with 1 cm gaps between them. Below bunks there are drawers and large open area for storage that is open to the bilge area, even the drawers are made so that they are constantly ventilated. No problems so far, air is circulating and all is dry.

European boats are better engineered than US boats. My Albin 25 was clear evidence of that. US built boats are good on blitz and pazaz but short on practical and down the road issues.

Don't know if it's because Sømarken is an European boat - but we have a wooden "Lattenrost" / slatted frame (?) under each mattress, like at home ...
