ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The Coast Guard is searching in the Gulf of Mexico for a 77-year-old man who had been sailing from Baltimore to his home in Florida's Panhandle.
Craig Neus of Panama City has been sailing a 32-foot beige two-masted Bristol since June, intending to finish his voyage in his hometown.
The Coast Guard says Neus was last seen Nov. 4 when he made a purchase at a resort in Captiva. Bridge tenders north of Boca Grande have no reports of Neus' vessel passing under their bridges.
The Coast Guard says Neus' family believes he may have been sailing farther west into the gulf than he had originally intended.
According to the Coast Guard, the search for Neus by air and sea has covered 65,278 square miles."

I heard he was found, had a problem with his VHF radio.

The Coast Guard reported Thursday afternoon that family members of Craig Neus reported his cellphone started ringing again, but they were unable to reach him. His phone hadn't been working in previous days.

Working with law enforcement to trace Neus's location via GPS/cellphone technology, the Coast Guard was able to pinpoint a location. A C130 flew overhead and located the boat and the missing man.

Neus told them that his boat battery died, and that he was out of cell range. He was located 16 miles southwest of Carrabelle, Fla. in the Panhandle.
