Water level indicator

Hi All,

Just bought a 2002 Mainship Trawler and have a question about the water level indicator. There are 2 indications - left is tank 1, right is tank 2. Are these both fresh water tanks or is one of them the holding tank?

Do you have 2 fresh water tanks? When you fill your fresh water tank/s does the level in both or only one gauge change? What happens when you fill your black water tank?

Thanks for the reply. To be honest I'm still trying to figure it out. When I fill the freshwater tank it fills very quickly (on Indicator 1). The second indicator has been at full since we got the Boat. And just yesterday we figured out the brown water tank was full. Therefore I am thinking that indicator 2 is the brown water tank? However according to the owners manual there are 2 freshwater tanks.

Will keep reading up on it but if anyone has this boat and can shed some light it would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible (probable) that the valve on the 2nd tank is turned off. Many folks only use one tank at a time. Tank 1 is probably turned on and tank 2 is probably turned off and remains full. Look for the valve to turn tank 2 on.

We have 3 tanks for fresh water and only draw from one tank at a time. When we reach tank #3, we know we should fill up again soon. Good luck in your "valve" search.

It is possible the boat has two tanks and your indicator 1 encompasses both. Many of our boats (ours is a 2002 model of an affiliated brand with Mainship) were built with two tanks, one on each side. Typically, the fill goes into one tank, there's a crossover hose connected to the other tank (and they level each other out), and the freshwater pump draws from that second tank. I happens our fill leads to the port tank, and our freshwater pump draws from the starboard tank. We have only one gauge for freshwater, and it only shows total status, not the status of each separate tank.

You can maybe check to see if that applies but eyeballing your tanks, finding a crossover hose if one exists, locating the freshwater pump, etc.

That could well mean your indicator 2 is for the black water tank, especially since you've determined your black water tank is actually full. If you have that pumped out, then recheck indicator 2, you may see a correlation there.

Pump-out your black water tank; as you recently found it appears full. See if gauge reading full drops to empty. If so... at least good portion of your questions are answered.

I own a Mainship 400 with two (2) fresh water tanks, one on the port and one on the starboard, aft against the sides. Each has a separate fill, one on each gunwal, aft in the cockpit marked 'WATER'. They are joined by a valve which I assume allows you to draw from either one tank, or both with the valve putting them in common. I leave the valve open so the weight is balanced starboard and port.
