For Sale: WAVE WiFi EC-AP-ER all in 1 WiFi marine unit

For sale slightly used in my Son's old boat this is an excellent unit one step down from the top of the line 1 watt all in one Wave WiFi unit.

I have found realistic range is more like 1 to 4 miles using a 12dbi marine grade WiFi Omni antenna.

This unit comes in the NMEA4 enclosure and includes the Bridge unit, a single CAT5 weatherproof connector to install to a switch or wired computers, it has a built in 250mw 802.11b&g Access Point for wireless distribution inside the boat. It comes with the 10 favorite systems option. I'll include a 1 year factory warranty and everything needed but the external marine grade WiFi antenna.

This is by far the easiest WiFi unit you can install in your vessel. You don't need to be technical to test for available access points and Hot Spots or to connect to them. It uses a graphic user interface browser based system to scan and connect the bridge unit to the CAT5 Ethernet interface or the built in access point. The built in access point works with Smartphones, Tablets, Laptops & Desktops. Supports all popular security modes and works extremely well with any CableWiFi Alliance Member including Time Warner, Xfinity or Cox Communications public WiFi Hot Spots. How does this functionally differ from my Wave Rogue Wifi coupled with the Cradlepoint CTR35 router? I understand mine are two separate units working together but does this offer better range? Higher power? Greater receiver sensitivity? Better interface?

Better receiver and filtering it can still be used with the CTR35 using the LAN cable outlet. However I'd stay with the ROGUE and CTR35 combination you have. This would be a great unit for someone looking for an all in one fully weather protected unit.
It's actual power is +29dbm basically 1dbm short of the HP or highest power 1 watt version. The built in access point uses a metric to change the access points channel to channels other than the 1 the bridge unit (part of the entire assembly) is connected to. Many of the older ROGUE units don't have the 10 saved access point feature the newest ROGUE units also have the 10 favorites (you save the settings for 10 individual shore based Hot Spots or Access Points.
An additional feature is the rebroadcast access point can be turned off and on via the software if extra range is needed by hooking up the CAT5 to a laptop and disabling the internal access point. I have found the extra noise generated by the access point can shorten the string by up to a mile. This usually isn't a big issue unless your like me and like to see how far you can stretch the string between the Hot Spot and your vessel. Or instead of the CAT5 cable feeding a laptop you can install an external 5GHz 802.11A&N access point and not create the extra noise caused by (2) 2.4GHz WiFi radios in the same case.
It's a real nice unit where the electronics are fully protected and everything except the external marine WiFi antenna is part of the unit. I also like that it will run on 12VDC directly so no wall worts or POE's are needed or cause intermittent power problems. The DC leads are well filtered and accept a wide variety of input voltages without harming the unit. It's a pretty serious easy as pie to use WiFi unit specifically made for marine usage although it would work quite well on a camper/ motor home...

Thanks for that, Billy. You lost me a little in the middle, but I recovered comprehension toward the last 1/4. I power my system with raw 12V power - no wall warts. So essentially, even the POE is 12V power provided from the 12V terminal buss and carried over POE.

I thoroughly enjoyed being out in the middle of the California Delta this summer and pulling in a marina's wifi 2.75 miles away as the crow flies. There were some levees and sloughs between me and the marina, but it worked for the two days I was there. I was even able to share the WIFI signal with my buddy in his boat rafted up to me.

I have often shared my WiFi connections using the EC-AP-HP the 1 watt version with the 250 mw access point during raft ups. I currently have 3 Access Points installed in Little Egg. Even though the 802.11b&g standard has seen upgrades using the N MIMO standard it's something I can use but my wife and guests can only set up the Wave EC unit without my help. I'll tell you I have deployed a few 900MHz TDMA Ubiquiti MIMO access points and equipped 5 special friends boats with 900MHz WiFi in their vessels we see 8 to 10 miles all the time. Sometimes I feed the 900MHz MIMO AP on my boat with Verizon LTE giving the fishing parties 4-10 mbps of data while offshore when they have no solid cellular or WiFi data coverage. I used the Verizon UML290 a 700MHz LTE USB MODEM with a direct connect external 700MHz through 2100MHz Omni mounted high to get Verizon LTE at 10-12 miles off shore and I'm able to share it through my one of many AP's with many friends while off shore. I use the CradlePoint CTR35 as well for the LTE USB modems CAT5 or 802.11B&G interface. Soon I'll switch to the UML295 on XLTE using Verizon initial non-boating tests indicate double throughput in cellular data speeds. I gave up on SATELLITE high speed or I should say not so great satellite data services when INMARSAT raised the FB150 data plans out of the reach of the average boater. The good is I'm glad I hung onto the Skipper 150 on Fleet Broadband because there is an inexpensive pr-paid SIM card where you don't pay a monthly fee and the card lasts for 3 month increments. I like the 505# (SOS) location based service that Fleet Broadband provided. But the data speeds are still just 150kbps slowwwwwwww........ but then again when nothing else works and the pre-paid option is rather inexpensive the Fleet 150 units are looking attractive again as emergency phone, get a vessels GPS location and data services. I just can't see wasting the 6k the Fleet 150 cost to replace it with the KVH BRoadband unit that can do 3 mbps DL & UL but with the equipment costs $16k well it's not for me at this point.

So I'm on my boat visiting a marina for the weekend. There is wifi but it is too weak to get to my Sony unit in the salon or to my ipad down in the stateroom. Would your setup help fix this kind of problem for me? If so, would you settle for $500 plus shipping? The Admiral will get it for my birthday if you say it will give us better wifi service when visiting other marinas and clubs.

Yes this should correct your situation. Your i-PAD had very limited transmit and receive power and a compromise built in antenna this limits it's range. It's really made for ranges to not exceed <200 feet. The EC-AP-ER is a WiFi converter/ package that is just shy of 1 watt (29dbm), couple that with an external antenna and your range will exceed 2 miles depending on the shore based access point. In addition the built in integrated AP is a 200mw. This access point redistributes the the outside signal in a robust manor inside your vessel. In addition there is a single CAT5 LAN port for installing a switch to run LAN devices using this device. I'd consider $600 but not $500. The unit cost me in excess of $1k and it's in near perfect condition. It needs 12VDC which should be easy to supply on most Yachts and Trawlers. You will need to purchase a marine grade WiFi antenna in addition to this package. The unit has the latest software and comes with a 1 year factory warranty.
I e-mailed you some documents on the unit. It's like the Wave ROGUE on steroids with a built in access point.
