Longest Voyage (One way) by a 32' Halvo

I was thinking the other day about what is the longest voyage taken by a 32' Halvo Gourmet cruiser or a 32' Island Gypsy? The data I'm looking for is in miles, not time. (example There is a gentleman from Pittsburgh, Pa, that has cruised his boat from Maryland to Florida and from Maryland to Canada.

My longest has been 70 miles, one way.

This is the gentleman from Pittsburgh.

We've only done York, ME to Deer Isle, Me, about 110nm, so far.

However, the boat itself (through at least 2 previous owner) started out in Fla, then went to Ontario, then from Ontario to York, ME.

There has been one IG32 for sale where the broker claims he has cruised one from Fla to Maine and back.

Well, this has been a popular subject and I'm not quite sure what that means. Either it's really boring or Halvo & IG owners don't leave the slip all that often. Maybe we are not confident about our 32 pocket cruisers.

Okay Walt, coax me out of my shell why don't you! But you'll be disappointed... In October we cruised 35M up from Aberdeen (Hong Kong) to the north-eastern most corner of the territory... about as far as I can go within Hong Kong waters! Will be doing the same again over Easter, but will do a lot of exploring/zig-zagging on the return voyage - could be about 60M.

Cruising into China is not easy (especially with 3 kids less than 5 yrs old!) but I am keen to explore a hundred miles or so up and down the coast - one day - maybe even the 250M to Hainan Island (500M to the golden beaches of southern Hainan) all of which will need much much planning and possibly some palm greasing.

Meanwhile, we are out on the water 52 times a year (so I assure you this pocket cruiser DOES leave its slip!) and make a big family cruising thing of every long weekend holiday, of which we have a few each year here in Hong Kong.

Mark: I certainly wasn't thinking of you when I wrote my last post. You use your boat more than anyone I know who is not cruising full time.

Given the number of IG and Halvo 32's that are out there, one would expect to see more contributors to this Forum. Take for instance the gentleman from Pittsburgh, PA who has his boat on YachtWorld. How many more Halvo owners are out there that never post on TrawlerForum? There are numerous IG 32's in my area but I think I'm the only "Gourmet Cruiser." I see these guys on the water from time to time but never see them on any of the trawler sites. As far as I* know, you, Dave and I are about "it" for news from the Halvo/IG world. (In the 32/34' range, that is.)

I think you meant scroll back up Walt, but anyway, I can tell you, looking at the other make-specific threads, your Halvorsen one is a roarin' party compared, at least someone is alive on there. The others have not moved in months mostly, especially the CHB one I would be on if there was anybody there.

Hate to disappoint, but we're not very far ranging either.* We've cruised SE New England waters, from Mystic, CT to Nantucket, MA.* We cover the Sounds (Long Island, Fisher's, Block Island, Rhode Island, Vineyard and Nantucket), plus Narragansett and Buzzards Bays.* All told, its probably 120 miles East to West.* I'm unfortunately gainfully employed, so all cruising needs to take place in the summer vacation time frame.* What glorious times those are, especially the time spent with the family.

I was hoping to do a 60M cruise over the long Easter weekend to Hong Kong's most remote corner but the weather was disappointing so we tried something far less adventurous. Took the kids 10M to Gold Coast Marina (north of HK airport on Lantau) for 24 hours of R&R plugged into shore power. Then did the same at Discovery Bay Marina on the way back. It was still exploring... just in a different way to what we're used to. And a less traditional Easter than usual save for the egg-tapping competition and chocolate egg raids (see photos below).

Disco Bay was especially intriguing. Amazing to see a marina 90% filled with liveaboards - all well manicured homes, mainly to antipodeans and brits looking for suburbia of the sort that isn't easily found here in Hong Kong - that practically never leave their berths. No cars allowed on most parts of Lantau island so shuttle buses take residents into the town centre, although golf carts seemed to be a popular alternative. Most of the boats are "Bondways" (www.bondway.com/gallery) which are HK/China made, although many are still variations of the typical HK cruising "junk" and some are dutch loft barges.


I've lived in HK longer than Disco Bay has existed, but only now got around to getting a feel for the liveaboard lifestyle.*What a great way to live!

I did a 200 nm trip up the coast when i picked up the boat
I am planning some more trips later this year

Hi Allan. Any ideas where you might head for? This summer has been a washout - literally, but we did our longest trip in one day of about 150nm between Xmas and New Yr, when we got a brief favourable weather window and went down and out the Southport Seaway, then traveled all the way up 'the outside' then back into the bay at the top, over-nighting at Tangalooma. It was interesting, and a good box to tick, but frankly inside the Bay is more interesting...
Any possibility you might venture down to Moreton Bay. if so we could perhaps link up..?

PS. Let's pretend my boat is an honorary H32, after all, it is only 34 feet, and CHB has an 'H' in it...
