That's what the original America's Cup was all about, privately owned racing yachts, not the syndicate owned monstrosities of today.

Is that a photo shop?

In the "good old days" being first to finish was the game.
So sail area was huge, tho pro crews fought with it, and boats were built to go as fast as possible.

With ratings the boat "races" became a game of creating a very poor boat with an even a slower rating.

The winning boat , however slow ,was faster than its rating , so won on points.

UGH , but that's how it was for decades.

Today rich folks will purchase boats in a class , and once again first to finish wins the race.

Good golly Miss Molly, it looks like clouds. Look at that boom!
The captain and crew must have been hardcore sailors. (The best)
They actually tack with this rig? That would be fun to watch.

I never saw anything like this.

Since the boat is running downwind a jibe is more probable.

But would still be fun to watch.

On the J boats a man was stationed on the spreaders to assist in getting a headsail across on tacking.

What a view of the races he must have had!!
