Maintenance & Repair on Camano 31

I read here that owning a trawler is to be constantly maintaining the boat by yourself or pay someone else to maintain it.

I've settled on purchasing a Camano 31 and I wanted to hear from any current and previous Camano owners about what maintenance and repair issues may come up on a Camano 31 so I can do research and be prepared to address them.

Some of the maintenance and repair issues I have read about are...bottom paint, zincs, engine maintenance, pump failures, toilet problems etc.

Typical newbie questions like; how often do I need to paint the bottom and replace zincs and how much does that and a typical haul out cost and on and on...

Being prepared financially for repair and maintenance is important as well.

Here are some approximate costs which will vary +/- 50% depending on where in the country you are located:

Engine oil and filter change- $40 yourself, $100 mechanic
Replace all engine zincs- $10 yourself, $100 mechanic
Replace all hull zincs- $50 if you do the diving, otherwise $150
Seawater aftercooler service- $50 yourself (gaskets), otherwise $500. This needs to be done every 5 years.
Bottom job every 2 years- $1000 done by the yard
Winterizing if needed- $30 yourself, $150 by mechanic

These are the routine, predictable stuff. It is the unnkowns that get you!!

There are a number of strategies vs a vs boat maintenance. Mine is to do everything I possibly can myself. I try to diagnose problems so if I can't do the work myself I can direct the mechanic exactly what to do. Diesel maintenance is just like auto- there are lots of parts changer mechanics out there.

My 28' North Pacific Yacht has a 2.0 QSD Cummins. Soon I will be replacing the engine zincs. Can anyone help me identify how many anode/zincs (and their location) for this engine?



Some mechanics have said it has none but I've already found one aft of engine near the air filter.

Ed look in the seawater engine cooler for a pencil zinc. Looks like the head of a hex head screw or bolt. Look in Fisheries Supply ect for "pencil zincs" and see what the whole thing looks like .. much like bolt about 2 or 3" long.

Cummins 2.0 QSD zincs

Good morning Eric;

I hoped I would hear from you on this topic. Yeah I've been researching on lencil zincs for my engine. I have found the one mentioned in my earlier post and I have noticed the hexagonal brass heads of things here and there that resemble more of them. I wondered if there's a source I can go to to order the exact size/length and hopefully the location of any others before I order them. They are inexpensive but I am afraid of ending with wrong ones after removing the old ones.

We just got back home after a couple months away. We brought this cold from hell that's kicking our butts.

Trying to get these zincs done for the season. When are you in Bellingham again?

You could call seaboard marine and they will have your engine diagram to give you the proper number and type of zincs. Make sure you have your engine serial number handy.
