In some of the (amazing) ER pictures I have seen hoses with nice, neat, big white lettering giving the year of installation.

What kind of marker would work for that?

I use a home labeler and clear packaging tape. The tape and the label might lose its connection to the hose but the tape will stick to its self and remain as a ring around the hose.

For a highly resilient marker that you can maintain your calligraphy skills with, Amazon has a large selection markers called "Paint Pens", available in various colors. I have a couple of quality ones in white and gold. No label maker, heat shrink or packing tape req'd. Just don't smudge it!

Ditto Luna, paint marker. You can get this one at Home Depot.

I use the "paint pens" as suggested above. I also identify direction of flow as a visual aid.
Labeling the fuel lines over the years has helped greatly. I have a few manifolds and many different possible configurations of flow. Visual reminders help when trouble shooting.
