Our new to us '44 Tollycraft is in desperate need of new anchor chain. My research has shown that either Acco or Titan are the most reputable? Watch out for 'made in China' as the quality is hit and miss.

We are in Washington state. Looking for best source (cost, convenience) that anyone else has come across when sourcing anchor chain.

Thanks!

Take the gypsy off the windlass and bring it with you so they can test the chain for binding.

There are small difference in the thickness of the galvanizing between manufacturers which can cause issues on windlass gypsies. By running several feet of chain on the gypsy, any mismatch will be revealed.

Great idea on the gypsy! Thanks

Where in Washington State are you? North Harbor in Anacortes usually has short lengths of chain they will loan out to test fit to your gypsy.

I would test the actual chain that you are purchasing.

I've seen manufacturing variances between chains from the same manufacturer. I've also seen it vary from the top of a barrel to the bottom on US made chains.

After the chain galvanising wears a bit, the chain will fit the gypsy better but in the meantime, the new chain may chatter and jump.

A lot depends on the tolerance of the gypsy. Some gypsies are made to fit one specific chain and others are designed to fit more than one size.

I will likely be investing in a new gypsy as well. The current chain is 1/4” and rusty. That’s why I’m getting new chain.

Doubt that Gypsy will accommodate 5/16.

Portage Bay-good idea on NH. We’re just 20 mins from them.

Check Gypsy availability carefully. I had to order one and it took about 6 months to get. Hopefully you can find one in stock.

Yet another option is LFS in Bellingham. I got a good deal there this year on 400' of 5/16 HT.

Titan from Canadian Metal Products is made in China and there is evidence out there that due to China's building boom, much of the chain from China exceeds requirements

Anchor Chain

I actually got my anchor chain on Ebay. This lady's dad had died and she was selling a lot of his sailing gear. I bought it CHEAP. I believe it was 3B. This was a couple of years ago. Stuff was brand new and worked great. Sailed all around The Bahamas and never had a problem with it. Good luck.
