GB model and layout questions

Hi!

I'm trying to wrap my head around the different models and layouts of older GBs.

What I'm looking for i basically the smallest model with three separate sleeping cabins. I've seen models called 'tri cabin' but as I understand it they have the main saloon and two sleeping cabins?

What should I look for? Is there any good URL for models over the years I haven't found?

I don't have any official links - however - this site up in the PNW has a good sized GB charter fleet - with layout diagrams. If you download the operating manuals there are lots of pictures. I believe you need to get to 46' before you get 3 separate cabins.

Also - at the 42' range whether the salon table could lower and be made into a 3rd berth was rare - but some had it.

As folks that just recently purchased a 1990 42' GB - we saw a lot of older GBs - older boats have been modified - we saw boats where the 3rd cabin had been converted to an office, washer/dryer replaced by storage, etc.

Our 36 Europa has two separate private cabins, and the main salon can be closed for a third cabin.

The only time you could close all those doors though would be winter.

I believe a 42MY (MotorYacht) is the smallest GB offered with a 3 cabin configuration. I'd google that and see if that's what you're looking for. In the NW they are very sought after and definitely get a premium price. Also relatively rare in comparison to the CL config. The 49CL is a 3 cabin but also not cheap or plentiful.

Welcome. As a former 42CL owner, I tended to pay attentiond to the brand. From your post I see you do NOT want to use the saloon as the third sleeping cabin, correct? I think the 46-foot versions may be the shortest with three such compartments.

+1 on the 46 being the first model with 3 staterooms. I have a boating guide that shows the various models by brand and it doesn't show a GB with 3 staterooms smaller than 46 feet. There may be something custom out there with a smaller model but I think it's fair to say the 46 model was where 3 cabins were a standard option. If you are looking for a smaller 3 stateroom trawler, Island Gypsy made a 36 footer with 3.

GB 42 MY with the galley up has 3 cabins. With galley down it has only 2. Galley up is more common.

With twins the’re could be a weight bias fwd due the the engines being well fwd .. part of other design issues.

Long time GB owners may have input.

I had a 47 Europa and it was only 2 cabins, assuming you are not counting the salon as a cabin.

The Grand Banks 42 MY can be found with three staterooms. Popular in the charter fleets at one point. The two forward cabins are actually very usable. The 42 MY gets mixed reviews - the aft cabin is enormous with the extra shoulder room provided by the raised aft deck. And you get an actual aft deck. But access to the transom can be a challenge. I know of only one 3-cabin 42MY for sale at the moment. We used to be one of the New England dealers, when they had dealers...

What about the grand banks Eastbay 43 model? We bought the 2 bedroom flybridge model but looked at a 3 bedroom (all small and 2 with bunks) near ft Myers. It's still on yachtworld.

I have seen 42 GB CL with three staterooms. Aft cabin, v-berth and mid cabin. I don't know what is missing but they clearly exist.

Love the Grand Banks, we captained a 46 on the NW Explorations Juneau to Ketchikan. Awesome experience but for an accident at the end. Looks like the 42 started the three stateroom layout as noted previously. But I'd go the 46 if it was in your budget.
