I'm going through the same thing with a different brand of winch. Brakes are really not part of a winch - you will want a hoist that has a braking system capable of holding rated load. The winch I'm replacing works but will not support the weight of the dinghy - it just winds back out under load.
I've ordered a Warn 12v electric hoist - unfortunately back ordered until late summer.
