Prefer trash compactor or dish washer?

I have neither and don't see a benefit as I'm usually traveling solo. When there have been 3 or 4 of us on the boat, I would probably pick a dishwasher. My lazarette will easily handle bags of trash and recycling.

We'd opt for the trash compactor, as we've been washing dishes by hand for nearly 10 years now. Especially when at anchor, it's become kind of zen thing gazing out the galley window right over the sink... When out for a month or two at a time, being able to significantly diminish the amount of space trash takes up would be most welcome.
Had both in our last house. On a boat, the trash compactor would easily win, but don't have one.
Messy trash doesn't go in the compactor, EVER. Clean and dry only.

I have both.... I've used the dishwasher less than half a dozen times in 2.5 years.... use the trash compactor daily. As a matter of fact, the original compactor died and I replaced it with another trash compactor.
I have a trash compactor in the house and have been wondering this same question as my wife, daughter and I are able to go from 1-1/2 to 2 weeks before emptying the garbage due to the compactor. We do layer in dry items, especially when compacting and minimize messy trash if possible.
The compacted trash is heavy but it is small and the lower frequency of putting out is a benefit for cruising.

We have both, and the trash compactor has been used once. Even on a 3 week trip we don't create enough garbage to have it be an issue. The dishwasher gets used quite a bit.
On an extended cruise we end up throwing full kitchen garbage bags into a big construction grade bag and store that in the lazarette. At the end of the trip we dispose of the big bag at the marina trash bins.

Not really a choice. Trash compactors are usually 12-15 inches wide. Dishwashers are either 24 or 18 inches wide.
For cruising, a compactor wins hands down. For marina hopping, preference might lean to dishwasher.
Compactors are cool if you keep live/wet food out of them. They really compress a lot of waste into a small space. Works well on a boat to just toss scrapes out porthole. We also rinse bottles and cans before disposal.

Never seen a fish washer on a boat. I find galley storage is way more important than either a dishwasher or a compacter.

Modern washers like Bosch measure how dirty the water is and don't use much if the plates are fairly clear before washing.
Another reason for a sea water rinse tap at the sink.
