Hello from Shelton!

Just purchased a 36 foot Uniflite, it’s my first big boat, have not even taken her out yet been working and cleaning and cleaning and cleaning and cleaning and getting the woodwork oiled up……. Purchased a brand spanking new zodiac 350 and a new Yamaha 9.9. Just need to figure out which davit system I’m going to use, really leaning towards the Quickdavits. If anybody has a better idea please chime in

Every time I go past Hammersley Inlet I think "I should go in there some day." Then I check the currents and think about the time it would take and by the time I've discussed it with my wife the tide isn't quite right so . . . It looks like an interesting transit, but having driven through Shelton a thousand times, I'm not sure what there is to see or explore at the end of Hammersley. Maybe some day, unless you can come up with some really fascinating reasons to visit Shelton by boat.

I have never been in there by boat as well. Almost 60 years boating in Puget Sound and I’ve never done it. I want to, just need to find the right occasion.

Like you, there doesn’t seem to be much to see or do once there. Maybe I’m wrong? The town of Shelton seems like a bit of a hike from a place to tie up a dinghy and given the history of the inlet, I’d be worried about fouling an anchor.

Even so, it bugs me to have a piece of water that I haven’t explored.

Hammersley Inlet. Where you can round Cape Horn and Cape Cod in one short transit. That's reason enough to go!

But it is about a mile from the Yacht Club to the start of the business district. If you do decide to go look at this chart snip. From the yacht club to Munson Pt is a wide cable area. Oakland Bay to the north is foul ground. About the only spot to anchor is near Eagle Pt and that could be foul as well. Maybe the yacht club can provide transient moorage?

We ran up to Shelton once in our Camano Troll. Got up there and decided low tide was not the time to return. The yacht club did have reciprocal moorage. It wasn't that bad a walk into town.

thanks guys. I’ll have to go there sometime. Sounds like the Shelton YC reciprocal would be the best course.

i used to live in shelton back in the 80's. my brother is highly involved with the marina there. he's building a cool boathouse there with an opening roof for his sailboat. i'm sure you'll run into him.
for anyone transiting hammersly inlet, there's a hand made chart made up by someone from the shelton yacht club (i think) that explains some of the more delicate parts of the inlet. worth looking at if you're going.
nothing against shelton, but i don't think of it as a destination. i can't think of a reason to go there except for the interesting trip down the inlet.
