That's exactly what I have been doing for the last 17 years with my boat.
Used to do 6 on 6 off when I was deep sea, then went to 5 on 5 off in the off shore industry and now doing 4 on 4 off working the tugs in a remote iron ore port in Western Australia. I can take off and when its time to go back to work tie the boat up and get on a plane and back to work.
Havn't done the foreign cruise as yet as my partner and I both still have aged mothers that require a bit of attention.

But with that kind of roster you get the best of both worlds.
 
What you also want to do is take the grandkids out on the water. But maybe not all of them at once.
 
I have a dream...but I'm afraid it will remain just that...2iC not keen...but for anyone keen to really cruise the would, as FF says, a motor sailer is probably the way to go, and this purpose built Diesel Duck is that and more. It has even cruised the Antarctic...
