On my Albin, the only flat area of the hull is the bottom of the keel.

You guys are talking like there is something wrong with flat sections of the hull?

Flat is less than ideal for efficiency at low speeds, especially if maximising weight capacity isn't an issue. But when weight carrying or higher speeds are desired, you usually end up with what areas in the design.

Hi Eric,
hope all is well.
the green paint on the running gear is an experiment. It is a hard paint that I am wanting to reduce fouling on the running gear.

Last time I looked, it appears to be working well.

my boat burns 1.4 gal/hr and gives around 7.5knts.

As to rudder response, yup it works well. Good as there are no thrusters

one of the prettiest boats on this forum

bshanafelt,

I’ve always admired your boat. It’s a bit like a boat I had when I first had the Willard. Can’t remember why I had two boats.

Look closly at the two pics. The aft part of the keel is very deep re the rest of the boat .. design wise. The engine (120 Sabre) sits so deep “inside” the keel that 80% of it is inside the keel. It was a Sumner Craft boat from Amitiville NY. Composite construction. 8000lbs .. 29’. 20 knots.
Does the green paint eat the prop?

Eric,

looks like a rounded bilge for sure, is that a bit of downturn right at the transom?

I don't know yet about the prop being eaten by the paint yet - just put it on last May.

I had put a strip of paint on the shaft a couple of years back as a test & there were no ill effects, so hoping this will be similar.

bshanefelt,
“Rounded bilge” to be sure. And you’re right about the “downturn” or hooked bottom. It’s kind-of a much more efficient trim tab. She rode nice and level .. as level as you’d want ar any speed. She’s the only boat I’ve ever had that cruised at 10-12 knots. The ideal speed IMO.
Can you see that the keel is as deep as the rudder?

Does the shaft still slide through the cutlass bearing?
I’ve been using ArmorAll w fairly good results.

Eric,
yes did notice the massive keel on it- I would expect that boat tracked like a locomotive.

I will find out in 18 months about the running gear paint - I did not lay it on super thick and expect the prop edges to throw off first - I am able to look at it with an underwater camera in the slip - so far the paint is intact and no hard growth - fingers crossed.

Boats boats and more boats.
And unique boats still come along.
Lang? New one on me. Must be a right coast boat.
Odd keel that makes much sense. Very flat and light bottom aft. Extreme flare fwd. Prop well aft w a fairly small rudder.

Should’a said “interesting” right off.
Thanks for showing her off Ed.

What would you say if I was a Lang owner?

I came here looking for another Lang owner.

There's a Ted Lang boat owner who will soon post - I believe. I was [early 70's] a Lang boat builder at Maine Coast Ship Builders. Welcome!!

Here's my Wellcraft Coastal. I think the only one on TF. A capable and comfortable boat, but VERY different from my previous Fales Caribe trawler Boomarang.

Finally got around to uploading a few of Sylphide's undersides. These were all taken just before I bought her. I haven't had her out of the water since, and I'm anxious to see what she looks like now. Divers have all said she's in good shape, but I'm looking forward to seeing for myself.
