As long as I can get fuel at Port McNeill I am golden

Greetings,
Gentlemen: The best I can figure is it's about 600 miles +/- from WA to AK. Fuel aside, is the weather conducive to running day and night for a minimum (guess) of 3-4 days? Other considerations, as well. Night navigation in unknown waters.

Can this run be realistically done?

600 miles 3 - 4 days at trawler speeds is a good fair weather estimate. Running outside the weather is the big concern. You'd want to be looking at a minimum 5 - 6 day weather window because if the wind comes up you'll likely be beating into a head sea not able to make your normal speed. In fair weather expect a 6+ ft swell but if it's on a long period, 14 secs or longer, with no wind chop on top it's not a bad ride.

Don't just look at swell height. Look at period, wind speed and wind direction. It's not unusual when the wind comes up to see the swell period shorten to 10 secs or less and a 3 ft wind wave on top. That is pretty nasty stuff for a 40-is ft trawler. Steep and confused.

In my opinion generally speaking I think June northbound and early to mid Sept southbound make the best times for that run. July brings warmer weather which brings stronger afternoon winds. August is often thick fog. Go as early as you are comfortable with the weather. Be back by late Sept and certainly no later than the 1st week of October when the fall winds are likely to start.

In an earlier post I said I'd want a well found boat. I'd want a proven long range boat, at least 1.3 X the planned distance. With a clean fuel system, 3+ days rolling and pounding will show you how much water and crud have gone undetected in your tanks. I'd want good solid doors, windows and hatches. Not wood frame windows, non-weather tight doors or non-watertight hatches. One boarding sea against lesser hardware could be a potential disaster. For those kinds of runs I don't like big cockpits with big sliding doors to the cockpit. I'd want a life raft and EPIRB. I've run a number of deliveries with boats that don't check all of those boxes, so it can be done, but it's not ideal.

I would absolutely need a good crew. Myself and one or two more qualified watch standers. Not just someone who knows how to set a course on the autopilot. Running 24 x 7 for days means running at night, the potential for fog, heavy rain and meeting a fair bit of traffic. If I have any doubts about the crew or their experience I'll take all of the night work.

A new level of caution regarding Canadian borders.

Nova Scotia is asking people who come into their province, even if coming from another province, to self isolate for two weeks. They also limited group gatherings to five and closed provincial parks where your car will be towed if in a park parking lot.

Land/Ferry/Rail/Marine (including private boats)

Essential Travel Only

• On March 21, there is a temporary 30-day restriction on all non-essential travel at the Canada-U.S. border.

• All travel of an optional or discretionary nature, including but not limited to tourism and recreation, is covered by these measures.

In 30 days the stock market will be zero'd out anyway and nobody will be able to afford to use the boat...I do, however, have a stock of TP on the boat that might be useful for barter...Hmmm.

Come to think of it, if Mr. Trump is correct, I have a reasonable stock of quinine on the boat, and a bottle or two of that stuff you dilute it with...might not be too bad...?

Gotta admire a man with a plan.

Greetings,
Mr. X. Don't forget the limes for the scurvy.

Taking the example of hydroalcoholic gel, I apply an inside out sanitization...

We hit the boat up for the onboard stock of TP and came up with about a dozen rolls and 3 bottles of hand sanitizer.

DING DING DING, we have a winner!

I too found wipes, hand sanitizer, and toilet paper on the boat when I was out fishing (social distancing) yesterday.

Don't actually need any of them, so I left them there.

Fair amount of local boating going on. Prawning is good and fishing has been hit and miss, but everyone is trying to get a few more salmon, as it closes down for retention on 1 April.

And if the border stays closed, we might even go up to Desolation Sound in the SUMMER.

We might go to Bishop Bay Hotsprings. It’s usually a gong show with Inside Passage traffic!

So... I'm a resident returning tomorrow. I've been in Ventura, CA for the winter, where, as of when I left yesterday there were 16 confirmed in the county and 1 in the city of Ventura. I've been living alone on a boat, working, usually alone, on a few other boats, been going to the supermarket and restaurants, West Marine and Home Depot, but otherwise seen just the same small circle of people for months, including my 80 year old father and stepmother who remain fine. Last I looked, Vancouver has more cases reported than Los Angeles, and Vancouver Island twice as many as Ventura County. I am headed to my boat up island and will be devoting time to projects on board, especially as I am to stay there for at least 14 days. I might hit Costco here in WA on the way, and I'll order online for pickup from Superstore. I'll follow the protocols. Once I get to the boat I'll be doing as I had planned, only about 4 weeks sooner. Likelyhood is the BC coast will be uncrowded this season. Yes, perhaps a locals only season, with cheap fuel too. I hope that bright spot doesn't end up against a very dark background.

In two days I went from reassessing daily to prepare and standby to leave on short notice and the next day packing and leaving in the morning. Maybe I jumped the gun but prevention has to be exercised while the events to come are still unknown. It's wartime, even less predictable than one with troops and guns. Travel up the interstate wasn't remarkable, traffic moderate but busy, least busy through Oregon. Of all the trucks on the road by far the most frequently seen have an Amazon logo emblazoned on the side, with Wal Mart a close second.

In New York at least, liquor stores are specified essential businesses and can remain open. So, obviously trips to the liquor store are essential travel...

So going outside heading north, you will be going "up hill" the entire way and the weather is at best a guess. Also if you are running outside there is no option to duck into a safe bay "when" the weather turns bad and a lot of times real bad. Another 40 ft Defever on the beach?

That's why only a few folks circumnavigate Vancouver Island. Most do it in a counter-clockwise cruise.

I have my next boat, under contract to buy near Vancouver, Canada. I live in Gig Harbor which is where I will bring it. But I am presently stuck in St.Martin (Caribbean) waiting for the airport to perhaps open on 4/1. Purchase will be complicated in that I will have to take delivery in US waters, but I still have a final sea trial to test systems and engines that have recently been repaired. Trying to get my head around getting to CA, sea trial, getting back to US (Blaine?) closing on boat there, then getting home via SJI.

None, none of that is going to happen any time soon. Sorry.

That's what I figure. Not a problem really in the big scheme of things. One step at a time is what I always say and until the airport here opens will be waiting on that first step.

Wise thinking.

The good news is, no one is going to be getting into close quarters with brokers, sellers, buyers, surveyors and wrenches until this thing is over.

Nobody is going to scoop it on you so see if the seller will just accept force majeure and pause the deal.

As of yesterday, 03292020, going to your boat in Canada, is a no go.

Don't know for other places but for me the whole marina is locked until third week of April at the soonest. Not sure if I will even be able to go there to work on the boat as planned anytime soon. Anyway I have plenty of other things to do!

We are locked out of our boat (home) in Port Whitby Marina.

Man, that sucks!

We have access, but are supposed to stay 6' apart while talking. The store is closed, but the bathrooms are open because there's a campground with trailers at the marina. You have to phone and make arrangements to buy fuel.

Sometimes it pays to be in a tiny marina waaaay off the beaten path.

Alan T, it's highly unlikely that deal can be made to happen while this episode is in progress, but if there's one possibility it would be getting the boat delivered to Pt Roberts and entrust the sea trial to the captain, go there via charter flight and take possession. You might look up and phone the marina office and see what their status is. But, alas... every government official you will deal with is going to have a strong view that this just doesn't need to be done right now...

Considering running at night, best if you can plan to do it in the portion of the lunar cycle just before and up to the lowest high tides when there's the least stuff in the water, and avoid if at all possible anytime near the highest highs when there's the most. And only go at a speed you're comfortable hitting a log at. I never run at night because of my boat's shallow draft.

It's certainly quiet around here...

BC now requires mandatory self-isolation for 14 days for returning international travellers.

You have to prove, before being allowed entry back into BC, that you have an adequate plan in place. If you don't:

If you don't have a self-isolation plan, or are not able to arrange adequate support, or don't have a location to self-isolate, you will be escorted to a provincial accommodation where you can safely complete your 14-day self-isolation

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/...9-provincial-support/self-isolation-on-return

Wonder where those accommodations are?

We managed to get out of St. Martin a couple of days ago on a US Govt charter flight. I will defer the sea trial/closing until/if/when the border opens. Thanks for your thoughts

Australia gave up on "self isolation" due to noncompliance. Enter Australia, you go to a hotel for 14 days, paid for by Govt, guarded by military and/or Police, you do not leave the room. Some hotels are upmarket 5 star, but 13 days on the gloss would fade.
Last I heard, 36 people developed symptoms while in enforced quarantine, so it works.

My brother and SIL were on a 2.5 month cruise around the world. Around the end of March the ship docked in New Zealand and kicked everyone off. They were fortunate to have some friends from OZ vacationing in NZ so they hooked up with them and were forced to quarantine for 14 days.

Then they went with the friends to OZ and were again quarantined for 14 days. After the 14 days were up, on April 7 they were able to fly back to Florida where they have a winter place, and were again forced to quarantine for 14 days.
