Selene 53

Hi, I've read all the posts on Selene quality, safe to draw a conclusion that by the mid-2000s, most of the issues were corrected? Any specific feedback, positive or negative, on the 53 pilothouse model with QSMs?

If you're not aware, QSMs apparently can have an issue, manageable. I'd guess likely not a big deal given trawler speeds, though. See writings by Tony Athens, sbmar.com.

the dry exhaust and related heat issues? aware, hopefully not an issue with the lower HP engines but very much appreciate the reminder on a point to check!

There is an active Selene owners group. Get on that site and look through the archives for issues of concern. Some years ago we were seriously looking at a new build and the archives were quite helpful. There are several Selene smart surveyors and yards that may be of help too once you spot one to move on. We had Selene 53029 built and delivered in 2005. By that time, the 53s were being built with the QSL9 engine. We put 5500 hours on that boat cruising Alaska to Mexico over the years and sold it in 2018. That engine had a failed temp sensor and raw water pump that we replaced. Those were the only issues on our QSL9 in 5500 hours.

In 2018 we moved up to a 2007 Selene 57. 57029 has a Cummings QSM11 which had just 1500 hours when we took it over. At 3500 hours now. The early QSM11s ran very hot however that was corrected in the later engines. As expected the raw water pump failed on the QSM11 at 3,000 hours.

Raw water pump failures on these diesels have been pretty common. Sbmar.com sells a superior pump which works with many diesels including the QSL9. The original pump failed at 1200 hours and the SBMar.com pump was running fine at 5500 hours when we sold the Selene 53.
