How old are these and time on them?

Also, what are you upgrading to? Thought the 480 was a fairly new engine.

Just curious, what engine are you considering replacing your Yanmars with?

The 6LY3-ETP is fairly modern and is smaller than the Cummins QSBs which would other wise be a logical choice but it may not fit.

The Yanmar 8LV would certainly fit but it is a highly stressed block and only goes to 370 hp.

Don't know anything about the Volvo lineup.

Hi Dave. Hope you’re doing well!

The qsc’s will fit no problem. Going into a Henriques 35 express. Tons of room

They put 6.7 Cummins in the new ones.

Exploring all options but Cummins has excellent support around here. As does cat
Yanmar a little tougher I’ve had yanmars in last two boats. No issues. Just not going to be my choice for a repower.

Doing great! Trailering my tiny trawler to a gathering of C-Dory tiny trawlers north of Orlando. Should be interesting.

Shoulda paid more attention to the engine room pic. Surprisingly lots of room in a 35' express. Sure a QSB or QSC would fit. Good choices!

If you haven't done so already, boatdiesel would be a good site to list your Yanmars.

Moonzy1,

Just curious....

Is the Cummins THAT much better? Seems like a very expensive swap and the Yanmars should go to triple their times or more. Or is there a reason to swap when the Yanmars still have value (not runout) and put new Cummins in you boat.

Will the Cummins give you better performance?

yes I want to do this while the yanmars still have value.
And yes better performance. Quieter and less smoke. Virtually none from the Cat C7.1.

I can do this w a sizable rebate , so to speak, by selling my yanmars running.

Opening up an old thread.
I Held on to my motors and has subsequently decided to not go w the QSB 5.9. after further research and learning on my end, I realized the QSB's were not the way to go. If Anything the QSB 6.7 in 480 would be a much better choice.

My 6Ly3's are still running well and are perfectly matched to my hull.

I am entertaining the new Yanmar 6LF's in 485 as my next option should I repower. They look and spec out great but still largely untested in the market
