The guy who owns the yard collects old engines. He's not very successful at channeling his inner hoarder.

Here is a skid mounted pump. Guessing it's a 3-71 power plant. Note the plaque from rebuilding in 1970. Gives specs on rebuild.

Guessing a probable connection to that pump and the US Naval base and shipyard in Yoko. Does look like. 3-71 but valve covers aren’t visible

That's what I see in the photos. As is the 3516.

I looked today and it is indeed a V-16 engine. Massive piece of machinery.

I sold my '74 Vega 2 years ago. I only thought they put the Perkins 4-107s in the Vegas. That's all I have ever seen. I had the 50hp Isuzu in my 40ft ketch I took to Panama in '73. Thought I would never be able to get parts back then because there was only one dist in LA, but turns out many Isuzu trucks in central America, almost every village had Isuzu parts, who woulda guessed?

Yokosuka is the site of a USN base. Yokosuka Public Works probably got the engine from the navy. From WWII and into the 1970, Detroit Diesels were the most common boat and auxiliary motor.
Yokosuka was a major base for the IJN in WWII. Several drydocks and repair shops. It's where those destroyers got temporary repairs after running into cargo ships.

I’m absolutely sure you’re right. Notice the ID plate it’s a dead ringer for a USN machine plate. I worked in Yoko back in 90-91 and I gotta say they have two of the largest graving docks I’d ever seen. As the home of the Seventh Fleet there is a lot of repairs and alterations at this facility. I liked it over there
