Thinking ahead to some extended cruising to remote areas we plan to do in 202 and beyond, I've been looking at spare and backup parts to have on board. One such part is a spare starter for our Volvo engines.

The existing starters have been painted at some point. I can make out the word Bosch (spelled backward) stamped into the housing and can clearly make out 699 underneath it. There are two other lines of text stamped into the housing above the word Bosch but I can't make them out.

Does anyone know what starter this is or what starter would be the correct replacement?

Thanks.

John

Clean the paint off and see if you can find the bosch numbers. Just google "bosch starter for volvo TAMD.. and lots pop up. A bit of a crap shoot that there are no errors there, but worth shopping. A good vendor will take it back if it is wrong.

Don't just try to go by the BOSCH numbers. There are some new really great OSGR starters out there for your engine. A much as half the amps needed to start. OSGR = off side gear reduction

After you find the spare starter , Install it , and keep the operating unit as your spare.

"Trust but verify.",,, As offshore sailors do.

Didn't he say it was "hcsoB"? Sounds like an aftermarket brand to me.

Sort of but not quite. The C, the S and the B are all reversed. It isn't the word that is spelled backward, the word itself has been reversed or flipped horizontally.

But I agree, it's probably an aftermarket.
