Westerbeke 8.0 restarting issue

I had been running my generator for over an hour then shut it down. 15 minutes later when trying to restart it will only run on one or two cylinders as long as I hold the preheat switch on. Let go of switch and gen stops. Any ideas?

Bless you my son. Sorry you may have to deal with anything Westerbeke. I will keep you in my prayers. May your experience be better than mine. Great equipment, unless you need service or parts. Buy KY jelly first.

If the engine is in an enclosure, it could be too hot. After shutdown the engine is hot but coolant isn't being circulated. The engine cast iron heats everything around it because it's no longer being cooled. If the fuel gets too hot it can boil, creating bubbles and pushing some fuel back to the tank to make room. Starting again would make the engine sound similar to needing fuel bleeding.
Generator start circuits usually bypass the sensors that shut down the engine for low oil pressure and high coolant temperature. When you let go of the button it switches to the sensors. If your engine coolant temp was over the auto shut off temp, the engine would stop as you let off the button.

Isn't the boiling point of diesel well over 500 degrees f ? No vacuum to lower it without the engine running....

ICSC 1561 - DIESEL FUEL No. 2

Meridian....I had a similar situation for 2 years....

The genset would always start fine but after running would not restart till it cooled a bit.

Finally the genset just started to shut down from what seemed fuel starvation. I played around with the fuel pump and because it was always empty when checking, I stated down that road of a bad fuel pump.

In later rechecking the sensor connections, the exhaust sensor connector lug came apart with a tiny tug.

Recrimped and the genset has been working fine ever since.

But, the engine symptoms were slowing and low voltage as in low power....never a lower nu ber of cylinder issue.

Well, when cooled down it started right away. I'll check the connectors also. When hot and I tried to start the volt meter showed very low. When cool it showed fully charged.

Thank you. My 8 BTD does not have this mod and have experienced similar hard starts.
