Stuffing box question. We have a 1980 Chung Hwa PT-38.
Planning to change the material in the stuffing box for the propeller shaft and rudder.
Never done it before and wondering if the diameter of the material can be determined before i take everything apart?
Single engine Leman if that helps.

Thanks.

Yes, it can.
A photo of yours would simplify the process.
A caliper to measure the outside diameter of the part that slides in and subtract shaft size.
If it is a different style, measure the parts you can see.
If a hidden style, opening it up will allow measurement and won't fill your boat with water. Then close it up and go get the size your measurements disclose.

Sure.
Measure your prop shaft diameter.
Measure your stuffing box inner piece diameter.
Subtract the two, divide by two and that is your stuffing.

If you cant measure the inner piece because it is jammed too tight on the outer, then you have to open it.
A good hint I read here is to have some drill bits handy and keep trying different sizes between the prop shaft and the outer to get the diameter.

Your CHB will probably be a 1/4" stuffing, but check it yourself to be sure.
