It seems that there aren't bronze fittings this size for this purpose available. Does this mean that all hose fittings (under 1/2") on stuffing boxes are brass? Mine, that broke, was.

Indeed! Bronze in smaller than 1/2" = lips on chickens.
Nylon in small sizes is very tough. I'm not enamored with nylon around the waterline either, but FAR less risk than brass. As you discovered, brass sits there rotting away till one fine day it just falls apart. Eeeek!
