Every time I have seen broken cables it is at the threaded end.

When I suffered this with no warning I was able to cut some new threads to get going again. Worth keeping a die of correct size to effect a temp fix. And a set of vice grips to hold the cable.

you will need to tweak the cable collars to compensate for slightly shorter cable length.
