Sherwood Pump for Cummins

Does anyone know the Sherwood part number for a minor rebuild kit for a p1730 raw water pump.?

I have a p1730 on the engine now and a brand new in the box p1730a*as a spare. I want to put a new cam and wear plates in the p1730 but no one can tell me (it's New Year's Eve so I'm not surprised) if the minor kit for the new one and the old one are the same.

No, I am not going to replace the entire pump with the better one because my Sherwood inventory is too deep.

Doc,

Depco Pump in Clearwater should be able to answer your questions. Their phone number is 800-446-1656.

"No, I am not going to replace the entire pump with the better one because my Sherwood inventory is too deep"

I understand.* I have read somplace that the new rebuild kits are better than the original parts (specifially the bearing and seal) so perhaps that is something Depco can answer. It would be nice to know.

As an aside, the Sherwood pumps don't always fail early. I know lots of discussion is on boatdiesel about failures, but they are aklways on planing boats that run high rpm.
I had a Sherwood 1730 on my 270 that I put in my old Mainship and after 850 hours (when I sold the boat) the pump was fine. No leaks or bearing play. *I did 2 impeller replcements during that time). 1999/2000 was the really horrible years for the 1730 pumps. They had junk Chinese stainless shafts, and they did not*machine the keyway properly all the time (left sharp corners to fail).
Since I had a 1999 engine I paid really close attention to the Sherwood threads.

When I bought the boat it had 1170 hours on the engine. I found the original 1730 in a box under the settee. It had a broken shaft.

Dear PO'd

Check out the boatdiesel.com website. The Seamax marine conversion for the Sherwood*pump is discussed liberally there along*with Seaboard Marine the manufacturer.

I'll second that, check out the Boatdiesel site and also Seaboard (www.sbmar.com) as the mfgr. and much excellent info for the b's.

There are many folk who have gone to the Seamax and are very pleased.

This seems to be the case with the Sherwood M71's on WESTERLY.* The following is from my maintenance log:

(1)(1) SW pump #1 3912019 [Total 3325 hrs, replaced shaft seal at 1750 hrs, replaced impellers at 750, 1461, 2495 and 3325 hrs. Removed from service 4/03, new backing plate and cam, ready backup]

(1)(in service 4/03 at 3324.8 hrs ) SW pump #2 3912019 [in service at 3325 hrs with new impeller. Replaced impeller at 4154 and 4875 hrs. Turned backing plate at 4154 hrs.]

Both of these pumps are 1988 versions for the CPL0742 210HP Cummins.* 1600-2000 rpm cruising.

Also, I believe that the Seaboard replacement pump is meant for the higher horsepower versions, and is a 1-1/2 " pump, not the 1-1/4" pumps discussed above.

Sherwood Pump for Cummins

To answer my own question...

For the Sherwood p1730a:

Minor Repair kit: 24578 (not all kits are the same. Ask what they include)

Impeller: 17000K (threaded thru key) model. They now offer this impeller with a threaded end which makes pulling it easy with a bolt like tool that they sell.

"They now offer this impeller with a threaded end which makes pulling it easy with a bolt like tool that they sell."

The impeller was originally offered with the threads, then they discontinued, then brought it back.

My first impeller replacement in 2001 was with a threaded end impeller. Sherwood did not offer a bolt so I bought 2 different length bolts to make my own tools.
3/4 20 thread if memory serves. Difficult but not impossible to find locally. A good ACE hardware store will have them.

RE: Sherwood Pump for Cummins

I switched to the Seamax pump on my 6BTA5.9 last year and now have approx. 250 hours on it.
I did not have a major failure on the previous Sherwood pump but it was clearly getting tired after 1600 hours, and the cost of a complete rebuild was close to the price of a new pump. The new Seamax pulls much harder, as demonstrated by its ability to prime the engine with antifreeze (for winterizing) when added to the (closed) inlet strainer - something the old pump would not do. IMO a major advantage of the Seamax is that it does not require a shaft key for the impeller. Having once had to fish for a lost impeller key in the raw water inlet pipe and always having difficulty keeping it in place while installing a new impeller on the Sherwood pump, this is a major benefit. Both the Sherwood and the Seamax can use threaded impellers which makes removal much easier, especially given the tight clearance on the 6BTA engine.

RE: Sherwood Pump for Cummins

Sorry Jay and everyone else. Johnson's Hardware is a fantastic family run business on Rt. 1 in Groton next to Dairy Queen, across from the Groton Town Hall. It is staffed by knowledgeable people in every department from plumbing to paint to lawn and garden. They have an extensive hardware section with great selection in galvanized and stainless.

I said earlier if they don't have it you don't need it. Truth is, if they don't have it they will get it for you very fast. Talk to Steve.

Not related, associated etc. etc. but a very happy customer.
