There are some very interesting trawler type boats designed today with outboards. However, the key word is "DESIGNED". Built new with outboards. Matched. Motors and weight that are compatible. I think outboard cruisers and trawler type boats are a great idea and right for many. However, the idea of converting an inboard into an outboard seems to be to be a plan with a huge possibility of disaster. You'll be doing something that hasn't been done previously on that boat. Probably people who haven't done it. I would not do it.

With outboards aft they will need to be mounted very low for the props to stay out of the high turbulence behind the transom. How far down is it from the WL to the bottom of the transom? The outboards would need to be mounted well aft of the transom so they can be tilted. And when tilted the WL will be very close to the engine. Do you plan on installing breathing tubes so when the outboards get slopped from aft they will have a source of air? My 60hp Suzuki OB cavitates in turns and I'm quite sure it's because I've maxed out the dia of the prop so there's only about 1/8" clearance to the cavitation plate.

Sure it can be done. But many issues to deal with. You should probably choose the OB w the greatest prop clearence and lowest gear ratio. My Suzuki is quite low .. I think at 2.67-1.

Outboard Powered Trawlers

This actually looks pretty cool-- like an aggressive houseboat.

Yes, that was the guy who apparently owned his own shipyard and didn't want to pay another yard to work on his boat, so rigged it up like that to take it home to his yard.

You've just added six to eight feet to your LOA. Remember that the next time you have to pay for a slip.

Thank u for your views. In summary, no one has been able to confirm whether this would actually work. The conversion work can be done here. As most people convert stern drives to outboards here. Diesel is the same price as petrol. Yes repairing the current diesels would be a lot cheaper perhaps I should start by looking to find new instruments, senders and wiring loom for my lehmans. I've recently replaced the fuel tanks on the boat. Old ones had started to leak.

Could it be done? Yes...
Would it work? Yes....
Would I do it instead of repair the diesels? No...unless it is absolutely impossible to get good diesel mechanics and parts. Once working well...you could go a decade and only need relatively easy to come by parts.

Saw an Hiptimco advertised here recently, I`d not heard of them previously, it was a single.
I`m in the "fix the Lehmans" camp. But if there is no prospect of getting them rebuilt I guess you need other options. Pretty much anyone can work on a Lehman, parts are available even if you have to import them from ADC. Stuff getting caught in the running gear is not a Lehman issue,it`s an access issue which I can see would be easier with the OBs.

I'd be looking for a better boat. That is, if I was willing to invest?, no pay, lots of money to stay into boating.

I've actually just overhauled both engines, heat exchanges and exhaust pod. But before I could get it all installed, my mechanic quit and moved away. I have very young children and a full time job. I love my boat but foresee using it a maximum of a couple of hours a month for the next few years. Hence the outboard plan.

You are so far down the track with the Lehmans it makes no sense to switch to outboards, or anything else. Can`t be that hard to find another marine diesel mechanic in KL, or nearby.

Thank you everyone for the wise words. You've all convinced me just about to carry on with the current set up. Would be good if anyone would know where to find 2 sets of gauges and sensors f
For the engine.

Try Brian Smith at American Diesel Corp. They are the effective successors to Lehman, have lots of parts, and likely know how to source those they don`t have. Email Briansmithadc@aol.com

I'm in the market for a new ob, and I was looking at the Mercury range. They also sell remanufactured engines, and you can buy just the redone engine block and fit it to your old ob without having to purchase a new replacement .

I found the idea of exchange power heads and cheap spares an attractive idea.

Are Mercury ob's a disaster?

Like most businesses, Mercury survives on the quality reputation of their product and they have been in the OB business longer than I can remember. I have seen a lot of Mercury's 40 and 50 years old still running along. Like most engines, gas and diesel, proper maintenance and lack of abuse figures into the equation. There are people who love them and people that hate them like almost all other mechanical items. It's like loving Chevy's and hating Ford's.

Saw this boat near Ft Myers Fl. 6-7 years ago. Sorry, I have no idea how it worked out for them, and I never saw it again.
