Motorola alternators & tachs

Last wknd we got close enough to a lightning strike that it took out 1/2 our electronics and the port alternator and 'maybe' both tach's on that engine.

The Moto alternator is not charging and the associated tachs's do not work. 120 Lehman Engine starts and runs fine or course.

Question: since the tach's are wired off the back of the alternator, is the tach not working just a symptom of the of the alternator having no output? I just thought someone here may have had a similar situation when your moto alternator quit?

On a related note can you even buy a marine alternator now with the 'tach output'? I'd prefer to get it rebuilt but that may not be possible.

thanks in advance

Yes it is rebuildable and yes you can buy an alternator with a tach terminal. Most bigger ports or cities has a rebuilder. You can also find rebuild kits and rebuilding info online. I rebuild mine.
Most auto parts stores will test an alternator for free.

Greetings,
Mr. 2d. I agree, the alternator is most probably rebuild-able BUT the tach, quite possibly not. I have a dead hour meter in our starboard tach and unless I misunderstood the information I got from Lauderdale Speedometer, parts are no longer available for that unit.
Look at this as an opportunity to upgrade your charging system with a more substantial alternator.
