Backing my CHB 34 trawler out of my slip, I lost reverse gear.
My mechanic opened up the Paragon transmission, and found a broken part, referred to as the "cowboy boot". If this is the only broken part, then it can be repaired in place. However, if the reverse strap is also broken, I will have to pull the transmission, and of course, the repair cost escalates rapidly. Also, the removal will require a new hatch to be cut in my parquet flooring! Thoughts?

Do it right the first time. It will save money in the long run.

I don't know what a cowboy boot is but if you can provide a picture or a better description of the part it would help. If it is the link from the servo piston to the reverse band there are aftermarket parts. I've never seen damage to the reverse band if the link breaks unless you repeatedly increase engine speed trying to back up. Most of the time if you burnt the band you will have a burnt smell to the oil.
