Fuel Priming Pump.
I believe my fuel priming pump no longer functions. The fuze appears to be intact, so i suspect the pump. Any suggestions for replacing it (type, etc.). Yes, I understand that all valves must be closed prior to replacing!

I use ones that look like this. Rated at 30+ gallons/hour. About $16 on ebay. I use them inline for secondary fuel filter changes and as an emergency backup.

PosiFlow Facets are a little cheaper
I just linked to the other since I know it is USCG approved for gasoline, and I may be buying one.
Some of these are 40GPH with a 50" dry lift.
FACET POSI-FLO SOLID STATE FUEL PUMPS from Aircraft Spruce
I know the dry lift of the 40288 at 36" is genuine, I tested it.
Aircraft Spruce, also does not gouge on shipping, I can get one using USPS for about $5, which is good.

Thanks guys. I will look into these. I presume they are ok for diesel? Also, I believe it is just required for priming the fuel filters in lieu of the manual lift pump on the FL135.

Fine for diesel or gasoline and some more too.
I know the good pumps have a good suction lift, a cheaper pump I don't know about that.

Continuous duty, I use them on generators and right now have it as a primary pump on a v8 boat engine.Facet pumps are electronic driven, no points. They use a plunger and an electromagnet.

I'm thinking of using them as a primer for my 6-71's.
Do you think I could use it to transfer fuel ? I've got about 90gals in a reserve tank that I would like to move to primary from time to time.

I have 671s and they will supply enough fuel if the mounted pump should fail. I have them inline and the stock pump pulls thru ok. I mostly use them to top off secondary filter or to flood lines when I've had them open. They should run continuously as long as fuel is going thru for cooling. I have run mine for as long as 1/2 hour. For fuel transfer it would take nearly 3 hours to move 90 gallons.

I put a Walbro in-line. After my primary filters, but before my 3 way distribution valve which either recirculates/moves fuel from tank to tank, or to my engine. Since it's a pass through design, it only gets turned on when I want to recirculate, move fuel or prime filters..

Sure, the 40GPH Posiflow would be a quicker transfer.
And has a 50" dry lift capability.
these pumps use very little power, maybe 1 amp DC.

Many of these inline DC pumps are used on RV to feed a gen set.
They operate there 24/7 as required.

David the only photo I have is posted above. I believe it has failed, probably due to "operator error". As mentioned, I believe it is located on the fuel line between the primary and 2ndary filters.

You would have to be careful to watch the volume of fuel your engine needs vs the ability of these pumps to pass that volume inline with your primary pump.
I know I can't do it with my. 6-71's but that's a much higher HP engine then most.

Thanks for your response. Seems like the aux electric primer pumps are either in line or on a dedicated loop with valves. Seems they can be mounted before primary filters or after primary filters, before manifolds or after etc. Which are the most correct set ups and which are to be discouraged? Thinking of installing a primer pump and want to do it correctly. Thanks for everyones input.

Most new little electrical fuel pumps only pump on demand...any resistance and they don't pump I guess.
When in doubt, check the specs.

Fuel is best sucked thru a filter so the pump operation does not mix the water and fuel , making the water easier to remove.

I installed this nine years ago. I use it for filter changes on the engine/generator primarily. It's great for bleeding the system when I change filters or clean the Racor filter housings. I did use it once for a fuel transfer pump but it's slow but will run generator/engine if needed. It's between the tanks and the first filters before the generator/engine.
I bought it at one of the auto chain stores for about $50. I don't have the specs in front of me but I believe it's 4-7 psi. Before I bought the pump, I called AD and NL for the their specs and I matched it to the appropriate pump.
