Tranny Issues

Greetings: I realize that the problem is connected to a gas engine, and not a trawler, but the problem is one we all could face.
A Velvet Drive 72C tranny was run for five hours and at the end of the run at RPM somewhere between low 2000 and 3500, the tranny locked in fwd, unable to shift. Has anyone had similar problems. Tranny had oil and functioned properly until idle down to dock and would not go to neutral. Bill.

Is the shift cable still connected? If it is, the next question I'd ask is what happens when you engage reverse? Does the engine stall as though the transmission is locked?
Apparently, when the forward clutches begin to slip in these transmissions, the plates warp and jam the clutch. When the clutch jams, you loose neutral and when you engage reverse, it is essentially trying to go foreword and in reverse at the same time this the stall.
There are a number of discussions online about this symptom as it appears to be somewhat common. If the symptoms are forward in neutral, and forward and a stalled engine when you select reverse it is time to haul it out for inspection and repair.
Good luck,
Bruce

Some VD use and electric shift motor and it can lock up. Does the transmission use an electric shift? If so, disconnect it from the shift lever on the transmission and try moving the shift lever by hand.
