Infared temperature gun

I am considering buying one of these for basic engine work and maitanence. The upper limit on some are at 500 degrees F. Is this sufficient or do I need to go to a higher upper limit for basice work.

I think 500 degrees is more than sufficient.

I forgot to put what kind of engines. Detroit 6V92TA's.
