Fuel gauge switch

My new-to-me 1973 Concorde 41 has momentary switches you have to close to read the fuel gauges. The gauge needles drop to "E" when the ignition keys are turned, but you have to pull the switches marked "Fuel" to read the gauge. Must be the sense wire is interrupted by the switch. This appears to be the factory setup. I don't know why you wouldn't want the gauges on all the time. Can I safely eliminate the switches and wire the senders direct? Thanks
