“Clacking” noise on SP 135

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

I had a similar situation.

5000 hrs with no documentation of replacing the dampner.

I documented replacing it on the Grand Banks forum with pictures
Time on/off the boat about 2.5 hours.

Original plate had plastic insert and was in prices held by rivets. Plate had numerous cracks. Same as this one

I always shited around 700 rpm, but idled at 800.

135 seemed to have lot of valve train noise at idle. After reduction was dramatic. New plate has springs

My drive plate only engaged the tranny input shaft 3/4", it was put in backwards at the factory.
The splines we're almost completely wallered out, but only 3/4".

My guess I had fifty shifts left.

Now shifts smooth as silk and very quiet.

A wallered out shaft passes vibration into the tranny, causing seal leakage and bearing bushing failure. A $125 part can cost you thousands.

Damper plate

If you search the library you wil find pictures of the various stages of removal and reinstall. We did this two years ago, the job is not difficult. If you have a pro tackle it expect to pay around $1300 and that includes the price of the damper plate. The boat does not need to be hauled.
