[Vitamin Sea II]

Hi, all! We purchased our 1985 35’ Chien Hwa Trawler in July of 2020. Although we are new to owning a trawler, we are not new to boating. Mike, is a retired US Navy submariner and has his Coast Guard Captain’s license. This Ohio boy fell in love with the sea, and the Maine ocean-loving girl. I’m Renee, that ocean-loving girl. Our son, JT, is 17 and loves the sea as much as we do. We found the boat on the hard, in Rhode Island. So, after a weeks prep, we went to finalize our purchase. We had a speedy 15-min sea trial with the previous owner, dropped him off, and the three of us motored our way to Maine, reaching our destination in 3.5 days. What a trip! We have put our 1986 26’ Seaway Norstar up for sale and can’t wait to have a full Maine summer season in the trawler. We both work full time, but every possible moment, we head to our mooring just 20 mins from our home. We are looking forward to gaining trawler knowledge and advice as we go along. Thank you.

Those longish maiden voyages/shakedown cruises can be the most memorable boating you will ever do.

Our story is similar, we allotted eight days for the cruise when we came to our destination in less than seven we elected to spend a couple extra nights on the boat.

You are right about that. It is certainly our case, at least so far, but we still have some years left so you never know!

That is a great acquisition story. Similar to ours- I bid on our boat on eBay, a ridiculously low price just for kicks, thinking we'd never get it in a million years. We won!! Uh oh. We did a beautiful fall weekend trip to Newport, RI, talked to the owner and ran it for about 20 minutes, and bought it on the spot. Sent him a cashier's check by FedEx as soon as we got home. He was a great guy though, truly exceptional and well established. That spring we flew back, loaded our stuff and motored out of Narragansett Bay, LI Sound, New York City under the Brooklyn Bridge, and almost up to Albany to have it pulled and shipped. Bold and crazy (and boy was that expensive) but we had a blast. Lifetime memories.

Yes, welcome to Trawlerforum. I would call heading off in a newly purchased boat for a three day delivery to home port, after a 15 minute familiarisation run...well...courageous. Of course, consistent with TF policy, if no photos, it didn't happen.

Well we headed off to run home for 45 days and 1400 miles after a 3 hour shakedown cruise. No problems on the way home either.
