New to trawler

Hi everybody.

After sailing for over 20 years we bought a trawler recently. It is a Nordhavn 50.
We just came back from 3 months in the Exumas and love the new level of comfort it brought to us.

For now we are on a 7 months on 5 months off schedule and plan on storing the boat in Savannah from May to October.

We are considering shrink wrapping her to keep her out of the sun. AT the same time we would use plenty of damp rid and mildew cide called Home Zone which we use with good result last year when we stored our sailboat at the same yard. We found last year that with no protection from the sun our boat took a beating.
Any opinions on the pros and cons of shrink wrapping a boat in tropic like weather, based on past experience.

Welcome to the Trawler Forum and congratulations on your N50!
I spent a bit of time on Duet (N50) and loved the boat.

No experience with shrink wrapping as we use the boat year around, but I'm a big fan of running a Dehumidifier here in the NW.

I would definitely run an electric dehumidifier whether you shrink wrap or not. Most marinas will not allow an electrical connection to a heater- fire hazard, but might allow a dehumidifier.

Just set it up on top of the sink so that the condensate drains overboard. You might need a couple for that boat.

Wow...a launch to Trawlerdom with an N50 is quite a jump from sailing. Welcome to the forum. You noted that the boat took a beating in the sun. Could you be more specific about the consequences? Calking, paint, windows, canvas???

Last year on the sailboat, after 5 months of storage, we noted quite a bit of signs of sun damage on different pieces of plastic and plexiglass. Like for exemple on rigging blocks cheeks, etc. Gelcoat showed more signs of chalking which was fairly new on our boat which had always been in the North.

Our nordy is in such great condition, I just would like to slow down everything. If I could have, I would have chosen a place which is covered in Florida, but our insurance wants us out of Florida and out of the water if left for 5 months during that time.
