looking for a used trawler

Hi There,
New to the forum, we live in New Zealand and have been looking for a 53 to 58 foot used trawler.
It has been a very steep learning curve as we come from many years of off shore and coastal sailing. The change seems overwhelming in terms of makes of Trawlers and which one to choose. We spent a week in Seattle in July looking at Selene's Nordhaven's and Krogen's, as well as one off boats.
We are also looking in New Zealand and Australia. Some of the questions that seem hard to answer are the age the boat should be, the number of engines and all the electronics involved.
There are many other questions, but we need to start somewhere and we wonder how important the brand is.
We would much appreciate any advice.

Jill: Some idea of how you plan to use the boat (ocean crossing, off-shore, coastal, etc, priority features, number of staterooms and approx. budget would go a long way toward helping us narrow your options.

Thanks for your quick reply.
Our ideal would be both coasts of the states and the Bahamas. But we have done ocean crossings in a sail boat and like the idea of the Med or coming back down to Australia or New Zealand. We would ideally like two king staterooms but can only find queen. Still, we may not have that luxury and possibly could alter one bed to fit 6'4".
We have been looking on both coasts.

Jill, where would you be based..? From what you've said so far, it sounds like you want to basically roam the world, or a good part of it. If so, with that budget, it would be hard to go past a good, late model, pre-owned Norhavn 47 upwards, a 55 or 60 even better...
Maybe a Selene 53 or larger..? Good luck with that anyway, but hey...the looking in itself will be fun.

Welcome to the forum? Would suggest you consider a good buyers broker(s). While the Norhavn and Selene are good choices, a "one off" might be a better match. Having a broker who is familiar with finding these offerings would likely make the search easier.

It seems that 10% of the value per annum is being mentioned. Is that generally true over several years or does it depend on the age of the boat?

It depends on a lot of factors. Insurance can vary wildly depending on use area. Extended cruising can either raise or lower dockage depending on time as a transient in marinas. Annual maintenance generally increases with age of the vessel and amount of cruising time. Fuel can be a small cost to very significant depending on speed and miles per year. While some operate below 10%, my guess is that a 7 year all in average would be 10 to 15% starting with a 10 year old boat. New would likely have lower maintenance costs, but higher purchase price.
