Vent about hoses and fittings

THREE hours ago I started a little task. Attach a 1-1/2" hose, and a 5/8" hose, to two barb fittings each.

Why the @#$%^& do they have to make the hoses just a little bit smaller than the fittings? Or is it the fittings a little bit larger than the hoses?

I know it's possible to make them the same size, because I've had others fit right up, snug but easy enough to push on with a little jiggling.

This took a hair dryer, a pot of boiling water, a trip to the chandler for a different brand of hose, a bottle of hose lube and every cuss word I know.

It shouldn't be this difficult.

OK. I'm done. I feel better now. Thanks for listening

OK, I'm going to tell you something that I learned the hard way.

There are two different standards for hose barb sizes. The "marine" standard, and the "household" standard. If you get the grey plastic barb fittings at Home Despot, they will not fit the standard marine hoses.

Learned this the hard way...

OK, that explains a lot. Thank you!

I had to scour all over for parts; boating stores, home improvement stores, hardware stores, and plumbing supply stores. No wonder nothing matches up.

A bucket of hot water and a bit of waterproof grease helps , but if you ever want to take it apart , its usually knife time.

When ever i put on a new hose i try to put a camel back in it. I want spare hose so I can cut off the end if I have to. Always nice to have the spare length in the hose. The hot water has seamed to help break loose the seal. Can not count the cuts in my hands and blood shed changing hoses.
