Today is a red letter day for Aussie sports fans with Daniel Ricciardo winning the Formula One Monte Carlo Grand Prix & Will Powers winning the Indy 500.

It is not nationalistic jingoism that prompts the post however, it is the manner of celebration.

At Monte Carlo the choice of beverage to spray over all & sundry is France's finest champagne, whereas the Indy 500 winner gets a pint of milk to splash around! Strange.

Even stranger, Ricciardo sips his bubbly from one of his shoes worn during the race & insists the post race commentator joins him as well, known to all as a 'shoey'.

We used to settle for a beer in the pub after a well earned footy win. Mind you we weren't that good.

At the 2016 German Grand Prix Daniel Ricciardo introduced this in the Formula One when he celebrated his 2nd place finish in his 100th Grand Prix by drinking champagne from his shoe and ever since. Ricciardo said drinking from a shoe is not as unpleasant tasting as one would think. *If the sparkling wine is cold, then it tastes good. If it’s warm, then you might get the sweat through it. But the cold taste kills the bad stuff, so it’s delicious he explained.

Anyone who’s seen the movie Beerfest - Festi-Bière in France & Quebec - remembers «Das Boot». Since that movie, the beer boot - or bierstiefel - has gone on to become an ultimate staple for Oktoberfest’s tourists in Munich.

There are many theories as to how the bierstiefel came to be a tradition. Once we were visiting my wife's family in Washington DC I have been told by Cafe Berlin’s manager on Capitol Hill that this military tradition started back in the BC years with a Persian general who made an oath to his troops to drink beer from his boot should they achieve success in storming a town.

Yes Sir a great story. But something that appears to have been forgotten in your post was Aesop always wrote in prose while Jean de La Fontaine wrote in alexandrine verses with finely chiselled consonant or assonant rhymes, which is the difference between a photography - as good as it may be - and a painting masterpiece.

One can also say that lyrics without melody do not make the song.
