Replacing windlass foot switches, cures problem?

I have a Lewmar 3000 windlass. Recently when operating the foot switches (either one) they cut out intermittently. I seem to get about 10 - 15 seconds of action before it will cut out, then after waiting a few seconds it will operate again for another 15 seconds or so.

I also have a helm up/down switch for the windlass and when I operate that I do not have any cut-out either up or down.

So, I think I have isolated it to the switches which are old and the rubber is corroded. I have ordered replacement switches but I am curious if anyone can think of anything else that could cause this (and need attention when I am replacing the foot switches)?

I do find it odd that this is affecting both the foot switches. It started a few months ago with the up foot switch and is now affecting both, with more frequent cut-outs.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Alan,

If you disassemble the switch you will find a tin plated copper disk that when the switch is depressed hits a contact that powers the windlass. I have noticed that these disks get pitted by arcing when a little corrosion builds up. With some emery cloth you can clean up the carbon from the arcing and the switch will start working properly again in my experience. I have a spare switch but because of short wires, I can only change the switch by climbing into the anchor chain locker so cleaning was a better option until fall when I clean the locker.
