Name That Part - Linear Drive

I have the remains of an autopilot system in my boat. The rudder indicator and a control box of some kind are still in the lazarette, along with the linear drive. I'd like to find out more, like who made it, or even how I can test it to see if it still works. I can't find any markings on it. Here are two photos:

Any ideas?
