C140w raymarine radar problem

Question. Today after about four hours of use my radar shuts down and says no data. Couple of minutes later it starts back up goes through it’s warm up And works for another 30 minutes and shuts down again. This is happening why am running the boat and it has plenty of voltage.i use it all the time and I’ve never had this problem before any ideas

I’d start with the power cables. Maybe a loose connection

Could also be an over heating issue.

Yes it could be low voltage or an overheating issue. I would check the voltage at the unit during operation. Look for any loose connections or corrosion at connections including the grounds.

If all connections are permanently mounted and you aren't removing the display frequently, then get to the connections and disconnect and reconnect everything a few times (5-10).

The corrosion can build up on the pins and contacts and cause sporadic disconnections. By disconnecting/reconnecting, you're esentially scraping the corrision off and making good contacts again.

I've had to do this with blade style fuses as well. Years ago when I was a computer hardware guy, we used to do this with cards on motherboards. a card dies. The first thing we'd do is open the case and unseat/reseat the card again. It very frequently got the server up and running if we didn't have a spare and were waiting for a replacement to arrive.

Raymarine Radar Problem

Check the power connections inside the dome.

I was in the process of ripping my Raymarine Radar out (2006 vintage with E80's etc) when I discovered that one of the power cables had overheated and was almost fully out of the socket.

The radar is a high current device - there are two positive and two negative DC connections - and the sockets for the power wires are too small. Hence the stranded wire had been "reduced" in size and made to fit. Over time some of the remaining strands had broken, leading to the overheating that melted the insulation.

I had a similar problem with an old Wagner S-50 autopilot. A shot of WD40 on the pins set it right every time, and put the recurrence time off for at least a year.
